You may still be able to use an old Kindle as a local e-reader even if it can no longer access the Kindle Store. Books already downloaded can remain readable, and compatible personal documents or DRM-free books may be transferable over USB. What works depends on the exact model, its registration status, the cable and file format.
Which Kindles are affected?
TechRadar reported on April 8, 2026, that Amazon would end support on May 20, 2026, for Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier. According to that report, affected devices would no longer be able to purchase, borrow or download additional books on the device. This is reported policy information, not a primary Amazon announcement, so check your exact model and Amazon account before making account changes. The report does not mean every older Kindle is affected.

To identify your reader, follow Amazon’s Kindle identification guide and check Device Info on the device. Amazon notes that not every generation was available in every marketplace, so appearance alone may not settle the model.

Read books already stored on the Kindle
If the device powers on and books are stored locally, you can continue reading those files. Do not assume that books can still be downloaded again from your account, or that borrowing, registration or cloud syncing remains available for a model covered by the reported cutoff.

Transfer personal files over USB
Amazon says Kindle models released before 2024, except Kindle Scribe, generally do not need a separate application for USB file transfers. Connect the Kindle to a computer with a data-capable cable, copy a compatible file to the device, and safely eject it. The connector, storage folders and supported formats vary by model and computer; use Amazon’s USB transfer instructions for the specific device.
A charge-only cable will not transfer files. A USB cable can move files, but it cannot restore Kindle Store access or deliver new purchases.

Amazon’s Send to Kindle format list includes HTML, RTF, TXT, JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PDF and EPUB. That list applies to Amazon’s Send to Kindle service; it does not guarantee that every format works by direct USB copying on every legacy Kindle. If a file does not appear or display correctly, check the exact model’s compatibility and try an appropriate format. Transfer only files you own or are authorized to use; do not remove DRM or copy protected books without permission.
Fix an ordinary registration problem, if the service is still available
If a Kindle that should still be supported cannot register, Amazon recommends checking the time shown on the device, installing available software updates, connecting to Wi-Fi, confirming your Amazon account credentials and restarting the Kindle. These steps can address ordinary setup issues, but they cannot reverse a discontinued service policy.

Should you reset, sell or recycle it?
A factory reset is not a harmless troubleshooting step. Amazon says it removes personal data, downloaded content and content that has not synced, then deregisters the Kindle. Amazon also says the device must be registered again for use. If your model can no longer register, resetting may leave you—or a future recipient—unable to use it as expected. Check the model’s status and save anything you need before resetting. See Amazon’s factory-reset guidance and deregistration help.
If you want to sell or give away a Kindle, consider the reset consequences before following the usual privacy advice to erase it. Amazon points owners to Manage Your Devices for device-specific trade-in and recycling information; eligibility and availability may vary by location. A replacement reader is an option if current Store access matters, not a required fix for using local files.

Choose the next step
- It works and has books on it: keep using it as a local reader; avoid resetting if you rely on its current registration or stored files.
- You have personal documents or DRM-free books: try a data-capable USB cable and a format compatible with your exact model.
- You cannot register: check time, updates, Wi-Fi, credentials and restart, then verify whether the device falls within the reported cutoff group.
- You want current Kindle Store access: consider a supported replacement and check local trade-in or recycling options.
- You plan to pass it on: understand what a factory reset erases and whether the device can be registered again before proceeding.
