It said it had made more than a dozen technical changes to reduce problematic answers and limit when the feature appeared. Google did not say it was ending AI Overviews. “Dumpster fire” was Futurism’s characterization, not Google’s description.
What Google admitted about AI Overviews
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown in Google Search. Google announced that the feature would begin rolling out to everyone in the United States on May 14, 2024, saying it could help answer more complex questions while pointing users to additional information. Google’s rollout announcement describes the launch.

After unusual answers circulated online, Google Search vice president Elizabeth Reid addressed the issue on May 30. In her official post, “What happened with AI Overviews and next steps,” she wrote: “But some odd, inaccurate or unhelpful AI Overviews certainly did show up.” That is Google’s acknowledgment; the phrase “dumpster fire” came from Futurism’s May 31 headline, not from Reid or Google. Futurism’s report supplies that framing.
What happened with the rocks and glue-on-pizza answers
Reid’s post discussed the rocks query and an answer about putting glue on pizza. Google attributed the pizza example to sarcastic or troll content on discussion forums. Reid also said some screenshots circulating online were fake, and that certain dangerous examples had never appeared. Those qualifications matter: a viral screenshot should not be treated as proof that a particular answer appeared in Search unless Google or another reliable account confirms it.

The company’s post is an account of the incidents from Google, not an independent audit of every viral example. It does not establish how often each type of failure occurred.
What changes Google said it made
Google said it had made more than a dozen technical improvements. The measures it described were aimed at both the answers themselves and the circumstances in which AI Overviews appeared:
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- Improved detection of nonsensical queries.
- Reduced inclusion of satire and humor in answers.
- Limits on some user-generated content when it could lead to misleading advice.
- Additional restrictions on query types where Google said AI Overviews were not proving as helpful.
- Quality refinements for health-related queries.
These were mitigations and triggering restrictions, not an announcement that Google was withdrawing the feature. Reid said Google would “keep improving when and how we show AI Overviews and strengthening our protections, including for edge cases,” while thanking users for feedback.

Did Google remove or broadly scale back AI Overviews?
No removal was announced in the May 30 response. Google described changes intended to prevent some poor answers and reduce appearances for certain kinds of searches. That is narrower than ending AI Overviews or establishing that the feature had been withdrawn across Search.
Later company announcements confirm that Google continued to develop AI-powered Search. On May 20, 2025, Google said AI Overviews had expanded to more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages; those are Google-reported availability figures for that date. In a May 19, 2026 update, Google described further Search developments, including AI Mode and a redesigned AI-powered Search box. These announcements show continued product development, not independent proof that the 2024 fixes worked. Google’s 2025 expansion announcement and its 2026 Search update provide the later context.

Google said content policy violations appeared on less than one in every 7 million unique queries where AI Overviews appeared. This is a company-reported internal figure about policy violations, a narrower category than all inaccurate, awkward, or unhelpful answers. It cannot be used as an overall AI Overview error rate.

The cited accounts do not provide an independent measurement of the feature’s overall error rate, the frequency of the viral failures, or the effectiveness of the announced changes. The confirmed takeaway is specific: Google acknowledged some bad results, listed interventions it said it made, and did not announce that it was discontinuing AI Overviews.
