What native Markdown support does
The update adds two related capabilities: editing in Docs and previewing in Drive. In Docs, users can open and edit .md and .markdown files while keeping them as Markdown files. In Drive, users can view a rendered preview, including clickable links and structured tables. Google’s October 5 announcement describes the Docs workflow as supporting collaboration without changing the file type.

Google says the feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. Rollout to Rapid and Scheduled Release domains began October 5 and can take up to 15 days for visibility, so an eligible account may not have it immediately. Google says there is no admin control or end-user setting for this feature.
How the new workflow differs from Docs’ earlier Markdown tools
Before this update, Docs offered Markdown import and export, plus copy-and-paste interchange. Those tools moved content between Markdown and a Google Doc; they were not native editing of the original Markdown file.

Google presented native handling as a way to avoid format changes, lost comments, and fragmented files associated with conversion workflows. That is Google’s stated rationale, not an independent test of how every document or collaboration scenario behaves. The earlier import and export options were on by default; copy and paste options were off by default and could be enabled in Docs preferences. Google’s July 16, 2024 announcement describes those tools.
What to check if the feature is not visible
- Confirm that you are using a personal Google account or a Google Workspace account; Google lists both as eligible.
- Allow for the gradual rollout. Google says visibility may take up to 15 days from the October 5, 2026 announcement date.
- Try opening a
.mdor.markdownfile in Docs, or select it in Drive to check for a rendered preview.
Google says there is no setting to enable and no admin control to change. The announcement does not give a separate troubleshooting path for an eligible account that still cannot access the feature after rollout.

The announcement does not list supported Markdown dialects or extensions, specify whether every element renders identically, or give a maximum file size. It also does not explain the detailed behavior of simultaneous edits and comments. The feature is described as supporting collaboration, but that description is not a compatibility guarantee for every syntax extension or editing case.
