A 16-year-old security researcher known as Faav reportedly gained administrator-level access to Microsoft’s internal Titan analytics service by exploiting a failure to verify JSON Web Token (JWT) signatures. The headline figure—17.3 trillion rows—was an estimate based on database metadata, not a verified count of unique people’s records or data stolen. Microsoft reportedly locked down the endpoint after Faav disclosed the issue and later paid a $5,000 bug bounty.

What the reported Microsoft Titan flaw allowed

According to The Register’s account of Faav’s disclosure, the vulnerability affected Titan, an internal analytics service, rather than demonstrating a compromise of every Microsoft database. The reported access was through Titan’s API, including a route that accepted database queries.

The distinction matters: the report describes access to an analytics platform and associated data and metadata. It does not establish that the researcher accessed all Microsoft databases, or that Microsoft customer data across its services was broadly compromised.

How the authentication failure reportedly worked

Titan reportedly checked several fields in a JSON Web Token, including its tenant, audience, application ID and user. But it did not verify the token’s cryptographic signature. That signature check is what lets a service establish that the token’s claims have not been forged or altered by someone without the signing key. Without it, checking the claims alone does not prove who issued the token or whether its contents are trustworthy.

The Register reports that Titan’s /v2/Query route accepted SQL queries without the expected Azure Active Directory authentication. Faav eventually set the token’s user identity to admin, which Titan mapped to a local administrator account. This reportedly enabled administrator-level queries.

The web interface appeared to require a VPN, but the API was reachable through an Azure-hosted endpoint, according to the report. Faav used archived configuration material to identify routes and table definitions. An automation bot he built, Antares, helped with reconnaissance and repetitive attempts; the account identifies Faav’s decision to try the local username admin as a key human inference. Faav described the mismatch with an analogy: “The authentication checks felt like a hotel where every door had a working keycard reader, but any keycard unlocked any room.”

What the 17.3 trillion-row estimate does—and does not—mean

The Register attributes the 17.3 trillion figure to Faav’s estimate from metadata across connected analytics databases. It may include historical, duplicated or derived data. A row count is not a count of distinct people: one person can appear in many rows, and some rows may not represent people at all.

The same reporting says Faav found about 25,000 account and email records, along with employee email and organization information and analytics-platform materials such as database configurations, dashboards, charts and dataset definitions. These are reported figures and categories, not independently audited totals. The reporting retrieved for this incident does not establish an independently verified number of unique affected people or confirm that data was exfiltrated.

Disclosure, Microsoft’s response and the reported bounty

The Register reports that Faav disclosed the flaw on September 5, 2026. Microsoft asked him to stop testing and requested his IP address between September 6 and 8. The endpoint was locked down on September 9, and the report says Microsoft paid a $5,000 bounty on September 17.

In a statement quoted by The Register, Microsoft said: “Their submission and coordinated vulnerability disclosure helped us to better protect our customers by hardening our services.” The report also says Faav stated that Microsoft requested cuts and changes to parts of his write-up, figures and impact language before publication. That account of the editorial exchanges is attributed to Faav; the report does not independently document the process.

What developers can learn from the incident

The central engineering lesson is to verify a token’s cryptographic signature before trusting its claims. A service should also enforce the intended authentication and authorization checks at the API route itself; a VPN requirement on a web interface does not, by itself, protect a separately reachable API. Faav put the signature point plainly in the account quoted by The Register: “If you’re a developer (or coding agent) reading this, the most important takeaway from this post is to make sure you verify signatures above all else when building auth.”

For readers assessing the incident, keep three distinct measures separate: the reported metadata-based estimate of stored rows, the reported account and email records, and confirmed unique records taken or harmed. The coverage supports the first two as reported claims, but does not establish the third.
