To sign in to a Google Account with a USB security key and no password, create a passkey on a FIDO2-capable key. Registering a key only for 2-Step Verification is different: that setup uses the key as a second step after your password. The steps below explain how to tell those options apart, create the passkey, and prepare a backup sign-in method.
What passwordless sign-in with a USB key means
A passkey is the credential that lets a compatible security key answer Google’s sign-in challenge without you typing your account password. Google requires the external key to support FIDO2 for this use. A key registered only for 2-Step Verification does not automatically become a passwordless passkey.

| Setup | What you need | How sign-in works |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey on a USB security key | FIDO2-capable key with a passkey created on it | Enter your Google Account username, then complete the passkey prompt with the key; a PIN or fingerprint may be required. |
| Security key for 2-Step Verification | FIDO1- or FIDO2-capable key | Use the password, then present the key as the second step. |
Google describes creating a passkey as opting into a passkey-first, passwordless sign-in experience, but this does not delete your password or remove other sign-in choices. The Google Account passkey instructions explain the passkey flow, while its security-key 2-Step Verification instructions cover second-step use.

Choose a key whose documentation explicitly says it supports FIDO2. Google names Titan Security Keys and compatible security keys from trusted retailers; do not assume that every USB security key supports passkeys. If the key was added to your Google Account before May 2023, Google says you may need to remove it from the account before creating a passkey on it.

- If this is a work or school account, check with your administrator; organization policies can affect availability.
Google’s passkey guidance lists browser and device considerations. If the key does not work in a particular browser or on a device, Google may offer another sign-in method instead.
Create a passkey on the USB security key
- Open your Google Account passkey settings and sign in if prompted.
- Select Create a passkey, then choose Use another device to create it on an external security key.
- Insert the USB key and follow the on-screen prompts. Depending on the key, you may need to enter its PIN or use its fingerprint sensor.
- When setup is complete, return to the account’s sign-in options and review the Skip password when possible preference. This preference affects the passwordless experience; it does not erase the password from the account.
At a later sign-in, enter your Google Account username and respond to the passkey prompt with the key. Google may ask for the key’s PIN or fingerprint. Exact prompts can vary by browser, device, and account configuration.

Choose a key connection and a backup plan
USB is convenient when the device has a matching port, while a wireless or NFC-capable key can be useful with devices that support those connections. Google recognizes USB and wireless/NFC security-key connections in its Advanced Protection guidance; the practical choice depends on the devices you use and their connection support.

Using one key avoids the cost and upkeep of a second, but it leaves you more exposed to lockout if that key is lost or damaged. Google recommends a primary key and at least one backup key for people using security keys. Keep the backup somewhere secure and separate from the primary key.

Keep another way into the account
Before relying on the key, add recovery information and another sign-in method. A passkey can make routine sign-in passwordless, but recovery and alternate sign-in options still matter if the key is unavailable.
- If you can still access the account after losing a key, remove the lost key from your account and add a replacement.
- If you have no other second step or have forgotten the password, Google directs users to account recovery. In that documented scenario, verification may take 3–5 business days.
- Google says a newly added key may take up to 7 days to become available at sign-in. After recovery information or authentication factors change, Google may send codes to prior contact information for 7 days.
Those timeframes are stated in Google’s current account recovery guidance and recovery information guidance; they are not guarantees for every account or recovery situation.

When Advanced Protection is relevant
Advanced Protection is an optional Google program intended for people at higher risk of targeted attacks, not a prerequisite for ordinary passkey sign-in. Google says enrollment is free, although physical keys may cost money, and recommends recovery contact information plus a primary and backup key. The program requires a passkey or security key; if you choose password sign-in, you must also use a security key. See Google’s Advanced Protection information before enrolling, because it changes the account’s sign-in requirements.
