These controls make tracking pixels less useful, but they do not stop tracking through links you click, and you must configure each mail app and platform you use.
What email tracking pixels can reveal
A tracking pixel is typically a tiny image hosted on a sender’s server and assigned a unique URL. When your mail app requests that image to display a message, the request can tell the sender that the message was consulted and may disclose contextual information, such as your IP address. CNIL’s 2026 recommendation describes email pixels as remotely hosted images with individualized URLs that can return an identifier or IP address and reveal information about consultation of a message (CNIL recommendation).

The most direct way to block this form of tracking is to prevent remote images from loading automatically. Depending on the app, the setting may be called external images, remote content, or remote content blocking. If you choose to display blocked images for a particular message, that action may trigger the image request.
Turn off automatic remote images in your mail app
Follow the instructions for each app and platform you use. A setting in Gmail on the web, for example, does not necessarily change behavior in a separate mobile app or another mail client connected to the same account.

Gmail on the web
- Open Gmail in a web browser and select Settings, then See all settings.
- Under the General tab, find Images and select Ask before displaying external images.
- Scroll down and save your changes if Gmail presents the Save Changes button.
This route and control name are documented in Privacy International’s guide, last modified September 8, 2025 (Privacy International’s email-tracking guide). Gmail may change its interface, so check the current settings if the labels differ. When an image is blocked, you can choose to display images for an individual message or always display images from a trusted domain; allowing them means remote content can load. These instructions cover Gmail on the web, not every Gmail app or third-party client.
Apple Mail on iPhone
- Open Settings and go to Apps > Mail > Privacy Protection.
- Turn on Protect Mail Activity.
- Make sure Limit IP Address Tracking is enabled for the relevant connection; Apple lists this as a requirement for the feature.
Apple says Mail Privacy Protection does not extend to links or attachments, such as PDFs. See Apple’s iPhone instructions for Mail Privacy Protection.

Apple Mail on Mac
Open Mail and choose Mail > Settings > Privacy. You have two distinct approaches:

- Protect Mail Activity: Apple Mail privately downloads remote content in the background and hides your IP address. Apple says the content may be fetched regardless of whether you engage with the message. Its two-relay design means neither relay has both the recipient’s IP address and the third-party mail content. This obscures whether a fetch corresponds to your opening the message; it does not mean remote images are never fetched. Apple describes the feature in its Mail Privacy Protection documentation.
- Block remote content yourself: If you turn off Protect Mail Activity, you can separately keep Hide IP Address on and select Block All Remote Content. Remote content then does not download until you choose to allow it.
Apple notes that if network settings disable Limit IP Address Tracking for Wi-Fi or Ethernet, your IP address may not be hidden from senders. See Apple’s Mac Mail privacy settings.

Outlook for iOS and Android
In Outlook mobile, turn on Block External Images to block externally hosted images while viewing email in the reading pane. Microsoft’s instructions are specific to the mobile app (Microsoft Support: Block External Images).
This setting does not block images included as attachments, including most images friends or family send as attachments. It also does not apply while composing or replying. Do not assume the same instructions or behavior apply to Outlook desktop or web.

Mozilla Thunderbird
- Open Settings and go to Privacy & Security.
- Disable Allow remote content in messages.
- When Thunderbird warns that a message contains remote content, decide whether to allow it for that message or whitelist a trusted domain.
These steps are documented in Privacy International’s guide, last modified September 8, 2025 (guide to stopping email tracking). Interface labels may change, so check the current version if they do not match.
What these settings do—and what they do not
- Remote-image blocking can prevent the mail app from requesting a tracking pixel unless you allow the content.
- Apple Mail’s Protect Mail Activity fetches remote content privately in the background rather than simply ensuring images are never fetched. Apple’s explanation is that the feature helps prevent senders, including Apple, from learning information about your Mail activity (Apple documentation).
- Links remain a separate exposure: a sender may track a link when you click it. Apple explicitly says its Mail Privacy Protection does not extend to links or attachments.
- Other apps and devices need their own settings: configure the protections in every mail client you use, even if they access the same mailbox.
These settings address image-based open tracking; they are not a guarantee that all email tracking is stopped.

Why the controls differ between clients
Some clients block remote content until you allow it, while Apple Mail can fetch it privately in the background. The available controls also depend on platform: the Gmail route above is for the web, Apple provides separate iPhone and Mac settings, and Microsoft’s cited image-blocking instructions are for Outlook mobile. Per-message exceptions or trusted-domain lists can make messages easier to read, but allowing a sender’s remote images also allows those requests.
Legal context is jurisdiction-specific
CNIL’s May 2026 English courtesy translation discusses email pixels under France’s Data Protection Act and related GDPR processing. It says some purposes may require recipient consent and describes limited possible exceptions, including certain security and deliverability cases. This is not a universal legal rule for every country; CNIL says the French original prevails if the English translation conflicts. The recommendation is available from CNIL.
