Browser privacy settings manage data and behavior in a browser, such as local history, cookies, permissions and tracking protection. They are separate layers, with one important bridge: Chrome history can be included in Web & App Activity when the relevant account and Chrome settings allow it.
What each layer controls
| Question | Google Account activity controls | Browser privacy settings |
|---|---|---|
| What is controlled? | Activity saved to a Google Account and related Google service history or personalization. Relevant controls include Web & App Activity, Search services history, Timeline and YouTube History. | Where do you act? | In Google Account activity controls, My Activity or Privacy Checkup. Google Account Help | In the browser’s privacy, security or history settings. Exact labels and paths vary by browser, version and platform. |
| How broad is the change? | Google says activity settings apply on devices signed in to the account. Other account controls may still retain other kinds of activity. Google Account Help Google Account Help | Generally applies to the browser or profile where you change it; clearing browser data does not itself remove activity already saved to a Google Account. | What overlaps? | Web & App Activity can include Chrome history and activity from sites, apps and devices that use Google services when the setting is on and its inclusion option is selected. What Web & App Activity saves—and how to control it
Web & App Activity is an account-level history control for activity on Google services and, depending on your choices, activity from sites, apps and devices that use Google services. Google says this activity may be used to personalize experiences. For Chrome history specifically, check both whether Web & App Activity is on and whether “Include Chrome history and activity from sites, apps, and devices that use Google services” is selected. Google also says Chrome history saving to the account depends on being signed in to Chrome and syncing history. Google Account Help

To review or change saved account activity, use your Google Account’s activity controls or My Activity; Privacy Checkup can help review a range of privacy settings. Google is gradually updating its Search services controls, so the exact names and layout can differ between accounts. Follow the controls currently displayed in your account rather than relying on a fixed menu path. Google Account Help Google Account Help

Google offers separate choices to turn Web & App Activity off and to turn it off while deleting activity. If you want to remove existing account activity, use the deletion controls as well as changing future-saving settings. Other account histories have their own controls, so changing one setting does not necessarily address every type of saved activity. Google Account Help Google Search Help

What browser privacy settings do
Browser settings govern what the browser keeps on a device or profile, what websites are permitted to access, and what tracking mechanisms the browser blocks or limits while pages load. Depending on the browser, these controls include clearing browsing history, deleting cookies and site data, managing permissions, using a private window and applying tracking protection.
For example, Firefox describes Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection as blocking or isolating cross-site tracking mechanisms. These features address browser-level tracking; they do not replace Google Account history controls. Mozilla Support Firefox: Total Cookie Protection
Clearing browser data and account history are separate tasks
Deleting browser history, cookies or site data does not by itself delete activity already stored in a Google Account. Conversely, deleting account activity may leave browser data on the device. If you want both layers addressed, use the browser’s own data-clearing controls and the relevant Google Account activity controls. Google Account Help Google Search Help

Does Incognito stop activity from being saved to a Google Account?
No—not by itself. Chrome Incognito does not sign you into Chrome, but Google says you can still sign in to Google web services in an Incognito window. If you do, activity may still be associated with your account when the relevant account controls allow it. Incognito changes how the browser handles that private session; it is not an account-level switch for saving activity. Google Chrome Help

Do Not Track is a browser signal, not a command that forces websites to stop tracking. Google’s Chrome help says most websites and services, including Google, do not change their behavior in response to that request. Browser tracking protection can block or isolate some cross-site tracking mechanisms, but it does not determine what activity Google saves to your account. Google Chrome Help Mozilla Support

Which settings should you change?
- To review, pause or delete activity linked to a Google Account: Start with that account’s activity controls or My Activity. Check the specific histories relevant to your use, since one control does not cover every kind of activity. Google Account Help
- If the concern is Chrome history appearing in the account: Check Web & App Activity and its Chrome-history inclusion option, along with Chrome sign-in and history-sync settings. Google Account Help
- To clear records stored by the browser: Use that browser’s controls to delete history, cookies or site data. This is separate from deleting account activity. Google Account Help
- To limit cross-site tracking: Review the browser’s tracking-protection and cookie controls. These affect browser behavior, not Google Account history. Mozilla Support
- Before relying on an exact Google setting name: Check the controls shown in your account. Google says the Search services settings are rolling out gradually, so the visible interface may vary. Google Account Help
