A fast download and upload result does not mean your connection stays responsive when it is busy. If ping rises sharply while data is uploading or downloading, excess queueing—often called bufferbloat—may be contributing to lag in a Zoom call. That test can identify a likely network problem, but it cannot prove bufferbloat is the cause of every call issue.
Why Zoom can lag when a speed test looks good
A speed test primarily reports throughput: how quickly data moved during the test. Interactive calls also depend on responsiveness. When a router or another network device holds too much data in a queue, small, time-sensitive packets can wait behind larger transfers. The result can be a noticeable delay even while a speed test shows a high rate.

Bufferbloat.net defines the condition as “high latency (or lag) that occurs when there’s other traffic on your network.” Queues can form wherever a faster link feeds a slower one, including the router-to-ISP connection and Wi-Fi interfaces. A good throughput result therefore does not rule out latency under load.

Test latency while the connection is busy
Compare latency when the connection is idle with latency during an upload and download. A bufferbloat test that reports latency under load is the most direct check. Bufferbloat.net’s Tests for Bufferbloat page describes test options and asks whether web conferences, voice calls, or games sometimes deteriorate.
For a simple check, run a ping to a stable host while a speed test loads the connection. Watch whether ping times rise during the upload or download. This tests responsiveness under load rather than throughput alone. A rise suggests a loaded bottleneck and makes bufferbloat plausible; by itself, it does not prove that the same issue caused a particular Zoom problem.

- Bufferbloat.net’s undated FAQ guidance says a latency increase under load of less than 15–25 ms indicates latency is well under control. This is the project’s guidance, not a universal Zoom limit or regulatory standard.
- The project’s test page says latency above about 50 ms or a grade below B is a reason to consult its mitigation recommendations. Treat that as a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis. Results depend on test design and conditions.
See Bufferbloat FAQs for the project’s explanation of the condition and its under-load guidance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Measure a baseline: Record upload and download rates and the loaded-latency result with SQM off.
- Enable SQM: Find the setting in your router’s interface or firmware documentation. The exact menu path varies by device.
- Configure both directions: Set upload and download shaping rates low enough to control the actual bottleneck while retaining useful throughput. There is no single rate that suits every connection.
- Retest and adjust: Repeat the same loaded-latency test. If latency remains high, adjust the shaping rates and test again; compare both responsiveness and throughput.
Bufferbloat.net’s mitigation recommendations and SQM tuning walkthrough explain the approach in more detail. The walkthrough includes one historical example: after tuning, latency rose about 10 ms over a 65 ms baseline, compared with about 1.2 seconds in the earlier configuration. That is a single illustrative result, not a performance promise or a typical expected outcome.
Choose queue management and hardware around the bottleneck
CAKE and FQ-CoDel are queue-management options used with SQM. CAKE offers flow isolation and traffic classes, but enabling it does not mean a video call will automatically receive special priority. Most traffic may remain in the default class, and priority marking is not a substitute for controlling queue length. Bufferbloat.net discusses these options in its CAKE documentation.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
A separate router is worth considering only if your current equipment cannot provide useful SQM and the router is at a bottleneck you can control. When evaluating hardware, check whether it supports CAKE or FQ-CoDel and can shape the directions that need control. Bufferbloat.net lists SQM-capable and OpenWrt-compatible hardware, including OpenWrt One, in its router guidance. The page says OpenWrt One was released in November 2024 and incorporates CAKE/FQ-CoDel; it mentions availability through AliExpress in many countries. Current stock, model compatibility, and firmware status are not established here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your ISP speed changes substantially over time, fixed shaping rates may stop matching the connection. Bufferbloat.net describes cake-autorate as an option that adjusts CAKE parameters as link conditions change; see its cake-autorate information.

Account for Wi-Fi and other causes
Wi-Fi can contribute queueing delay too, so a router’s SQM setting may not control every source of delay between a device and the call service. A high under-load ping is evidence of a responsiveness problem somewhere along the tested path, not proof of which device or link is responsible. The likely remedy depends on whether the controllable bottleneck is the router, Wi-Fi, or ISP equipment.
If loaded latency stays under control but calls still lag, bufferbloat is less strongly supported by this check. The available sources do not establish Zoom-specific thresholds or diagnose other causes; avoid treating a speed test or one ping result as a complete explanation.
