Why gold was supported
The report cited a softer US dollar and lower oil prices as factors supporting gold. Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, told Reuters that lower oil and a more subdued dollar had given gold room to rise at the start of the week. He also said easing oil prices reduced immediate inflation and interest-rate anxiety, which could help gold from a yield perspective.

Which US data markets were watching
Reuters said investors were awaiting US consumer price index (CPI) data on Wednesday, October 14, followed by producer price index (PPI) data and retail-sales data on Thursday, October 15. The report did not identify the CPI reference month or give release times.
The figures matter to markets because inflation and consumer-spending data can shape expectations about interest rates. The report did not provide consensus forecasts or establish what the releases would mean for the Federal Reserve’s next decision.
