What happened to Brent and WTI?
On October 12, Gulf News reported Brent below $103 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) near $90 in early trading. Those were intraday levels, not settlement prices. Earlier, Reuters reported that on October 6 at 10:30 a.m. EDT, Brent was down $1.84, or 1.8%, at $98.48 a barrel, while WTI had fallen $1.42, or 1.6%, to $88.01. The decline reflected a balance of expectations and risk. Signals that more crude and refined products could move through the market eased concerns about tight supply. At the same time, attacks and the threat of disruption to key shipping routes kept traders from treating the improvement as a return to normal.
Why did the Russian diesel announcement matter?
Reuters reported on October 9 that President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately to the American and global market. He also announced 500,000 tons for November and 1 million tons “immediately thereafter”; a further 3 million tons, he said, could arrive “within a short period of time,” depending on the condition of Russian diesel refineries. The figures describe Trump’s announcement, not independently verified deliveries or a confirmed cargo schedule. Reuters, October 9.

Diesel is a refined petroleum product, while Brent and WTI are crude-oil benchmarks. Expected diesel supply can affect the wider energy balance and market sentiment, but announced diesel tonnage is not equivalent to the same amount of crude entering the market. Refinery output, cargo timing, shipping and actual delivery all matter. The reports available by October 12 did not confirm that the announced fuel had arrived or quantify an effect on Brent or WTI. Were Middle East oil exports recovering?
Reporting pointed to stronger flows, though the scale and routes matter. The National, citing preliminary Kpler data, said Saudi shipments through the Strait of Hormuz reached 2.9 million barrels per day in September, up from around 1 million barrels per day in August. Gulf News, attributing its estimate to JPMorgan Chase, reported Persian Gulf exports of 17.5 million barrels per day—98% of pre-war levels—on October 12. These figures come from different sources and describe different measures; neither means that every export route or product flow had fully recovered. The National, October 2; Gulf News, October 12.

Reuters also reported on October 6 that Vitol’s chief executive estimated around 12 million barrels per day of crude and 2 million barrels per day of refined products had left the Middle East on tankers during the preceding seven to ten days. That is an attributed estimate for a specific period, not a continuing export rate. More supply does not mean every route is safe
Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline to Yanbu was partially reopened after September attacks, according to The National. The report also described Saudi Arabia shifting more crude through Hormuz, a route that remains exposed to regional tensions. An alternative route can help maintain exports, but its capacity and vulnerability differ from those of the waterway it helps bypass. The National, October 2.

Attacks on Saudi airports and the risk to shipping continued to weigh against the more reassuring flow data. Dow Jones reported on October 7 that shipping risks, insurance and transportation costs remained elevated, alongside constrained Persian Gulf and Russian diesel flows. How did stock-release plans affect the outlook?
On October 6, Reuters said G7 members had agreed to release emergency crude and diesel stocks, which helped ease concerns about supply. The report said the group had not yet provided a product-by-product breakdown or named participating countries. An agreement can shape expectations, but its near-term effect depends on volumes, timing and what reaches the market. Reuters, October 6.

Separately, The National reported on October 2 that EU governments were discussing a French proposal for an IEA-member release of 50 million barrels of diesel and 50 million barrels of crude. Those were proposed volumes under discussion in that report, not stocks already delivered to consumers. The National, October 2.
What traders were balancing
- Potentially looser supply: stronger Middle East export flows, expected Russian diesel volumes and emergency-stock plans all offered reasons to expect more fuel availability.
- Persistent disruption risk: attacks, exposure of shipping routes and higher transport and insurance costs meant supply could still be interrupted or become more expensive to move.
- Different products and timeframes: crude benchmarks, refined diesel, announced future cargoes and observed tanker exports are not interchangeable measures of supply.
Reuters quoted oil broker PVM analyst John Evans saying that “the assumption of more crude getting through has dampened price fervour … for now.” The qualification matters: the market was responding to expectations of improved flows, while the underlying risks remained. Reuters, October 6.
