What is Godzilla Minus Zero about?
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also leads the visual-effects work, Godzilla Minus Zero follows Godzilla Minus One. Its story takes place in 1949, two years after the previous film, and returns to the Shikishima family as Japan tries to recover from war and confronts a new calamity. The official synopsis describes a fragile peace and hard-won recovery shattered by another threat. TOHO’s official film announcement and Piece of Magic Entertainment’s announcement both frame the sequel around that interrupted recovery.
TOHO Studios and ROBOT are named as producers, with SHIROGUMI handling visual effects in GKIDS and TOHO’s release announcement. TOHO is distributing the film in Japan; GKIDS is handling its wide North American release.
What do early reviews say?
The two available reviews, published around the film’s September 26, 2026 New York Film Festival premiere, reach different conclusions. Neither represents a broad audience sample, and one positive headline should not be mistaken for consensus.

The split is useful if you are deciding what kind of sequel you want: GamesRadar+ finds the expanded scope emotionally effective despite its loss of focus, while The Daily Beast sees the human-monster balance as a weakness. These are individual critics’ judgments, not proof of how fans or general audiences will respond.
How long is Godzilla Minus Zero, and when does it release?
GamesRadar+ lists the runtime as 135 minutes. Treat that as the review’s listing rather than a separately confirmed official runtime, and check current exhibitor information if the exact length matters to your plans.

Godzilla Minus One gives the sequel a high-profile predecessor: TOHO and GKIDS say it grossed more than $116 million worldwide and won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, the first Asian film to win that award. Those are claims about the earlier film, not Minus Zero’s performance. The new movie had not opened to general theatrical audiences by October 3, 2026, and the available sources provide no verified audience score, review-aggregation score, box office result, or representative measure of fan opinion.

For now, the most grounded expectation is a bigger continuation of Yamazaki’s postwar story whose balance of family drama and monster action is already dividing early critics. Whether that mix works for you depends in part on how much time you want the film to give its human characters versus Godzilla.
