Godot 4 change_scene_to_file() Not Working? 4 Causes and Fixes

change_scene_to_file() returns an Error that tells you where the failure is. Learn what ERR_CANT_OPEN and ERR_CANT_CREATE mean, why current_scene can be null after a successful call, and how to debug manual scene trees.

When get_tree().change_scene_to_file() seems to do nothing, start with the value it returns. The method returns an Error, and the two codes that matter most point to different problems. ERR_CANT_OPEN means the path never became a loadable PackedScene. ERR_CANT_CREATE means the scene loaded but could not be instantiated. A return value of OK only means the transition was accepted, not that the new scene is already running. The sections below follow that order.

Quick triage

What you observe Most likely cause First check
The call returns ERR_CANT_OPEN The path does not resolve to a scene resource that can be loaded into a PackedScene Confirm the exact res:// path, spelling, capitalization, and extension
The call returns ERR_CANT_CREATE The scene loads but cannot be instantiated Open the target scene in the editor and read the Output panel
The call returns OK, but code reading current_scene right after it gets null The code reads the new scene before the deferred transition completes Await get_tree().scene_changed before using the destination
The old scene stays visible, or two scenes appear in the Remote tree Custom code adds, retains, or hides scenes alongside the built-in transition Inspect the Remote scene tree and the code that adds or removes nodes

Check the returned Error first

Store the return value and report it. A failed call returns immediately, so logging it is the fastest way to separate a path problem from a timing problem:

func go_to_level() -> void:
    var error := get_tree().change_scene_to_file("res://levels/level2.tscn")
    if error != OK:
        push_error("Scene change failed: %s" % error)
        return

    await get_tree().scene_changed
    print(get_tree().current_scene)

This example illustrates the documented return value and signal sequence; it has not been run against a specific project. The SceneTree class reference documents the method, its error behavior, and the scene_changed signal.

Four causes and fixes

1. The path does not resolve to a PackedScene

change_scene_to_file() loads the path you pass into a PackedScene. ERR_CANT_OPEN indicates that this load failed. Check the folder and file name letter by letter, including capitalization, since project paths are case-sensitive on Linux and many exported builds. Confirm that the file ends in .tscn and that it sits inside the project rather than a folder outside it.

Use an explicit project path such as res://levels/level2.tscn. The ResourceLoader class reference notes that it returns an empty resource when no registered loader handles a resource, and prints an error when no file exists at the specified path. It also prefixes relative paths with res://, and the documentation recommends absolute paths to avoid unexpected results. A path that works in the editor but fails at runtime often traces back to a relative path or a renamed file.

2. The scene cannot be instantiated

ERR_CANT_CREATE means the path loaded but Godot could not create an instance of the scene. Open the target scene in the editor. If it fails to open cleanly, or shows missing nodes, broken scripts, or missing resources, fix those first. Then run the game and read the Output panel for the errors emitted at the moment of the change. The return code only identifies the category; the specific cause, such as a script parse error or a missing dependency, appears in the log.

3. The transition is deferred, but code expects an immediate result

A successful call requests the change; it does not finish it. The SceneTree reference describes a transition period in which the outgoing scene has been removed and current_scene is null. The new scene becomes available after the frame transition completes. Code that runs directly after the call, such as one that looks up a node in the new scene or assigns variables on it, will therefore fail or get null.

The fix is to wait for the signal:

  • Use await get_tree().scene_changed before reading current_scene or touching nodes in the destination.
  • Move any setup that depends on the new scene into the code that runs after that await, or into the new scene’s own _ready() function.

The SceneTree reference states: “If you want to reliably access the new scene, await the scene_changed signal.” The method’s deferred behavior is documented for the Godot 4 line, but if you maintain an older 4.x project, confirm the behavior against the docs for your installed minor version.

4. Custom code adds or retains scenes instead of replacing the current one

The built-in change_scene_to_file() replaces the current scene. Some projects instead add scenes under the root, hide a prior scene, or keep it in memory for later use. These are separate strategies. Retaining a scene can leave several scenes in the tree at once, and it keeps processing, memory, and stale state alive unless the code manages those explicitly. The Change scenes manually tutorial describes these manual approaches.

Two checks cover most of this branch:

  • Open the Remote tab in the Scene dock while the game runs. If the old scene is still listed under the root, something removed it from the tree but did not free it, or never removed it.
  • Search your code for add_child, remove_child, queue_free, and any direct assignment to current_scene. The SceneTree reference warns that assigning current_scene directly does not manage the tree. Setting the property alone does not add or remove nodes, so it cannot substitute for the tree operations.

Pick one approach per transition. If you use the built-in method, remove the manual scene handling for the same transition. If you use manual scene management, make sure every scene you add is either freed or deliberately kept.

Diagnostic order

  1. Store the Error returned by change_scene_to_file() and distinguish ERR_CANT_OPEN from ERR_CANT_CREATE.
  2. For ERR_CANT_OPEN, verify the exact res:// path and that it points to the intended .tscn file.
  3. For ERR_CANT_CREATE, open the target scene in the editor and read the Output panel while the transition runs.
  4. If the call returns OK, await scene_changed before reading current_scene or relying on nodes in the new scene.
  5. If old and new content appear together, or the wrong scene shows, inspect the Remote scene tree and any transition-manager code that adds, hides, or retains scenes.
  6. If the change is correct but the game freezes briefly while loading, the simple method loads the new scene before it runs, and that can stall on large scenes. Background loading with a loading screen is the usual remedy for that delay. It does not repair an invalid path or a scene that cannot be instantiated, so rule out steps 1 through 3 first.

What the documentation does and does not establish

The official Godot documentation explains the return codes, the deferred transition, and the recommended scene_changed pattern. It does not publish how often this failure occurs, and it does not identify the cause in any particular project. The four causes above are the documented failure categories, not measured frequencies. To find the cause in your own project, use the error code and the messages in the Output panel.

The examples and steps here were written from the documentation and have not been run against a specific project. The linked tutorials are for the 4.4 line, and the class reference is the stable branch, so match them to the Godot minor version your project uses.
