Connecting an Existing LMS to Multi-DRM Playback: An Integration Pattern

LTI 1.3 can carry the launch from an LMS into a video tool, but it does not encrypt media or issue DRM licenses. Here is how the layers divide, the six-step integration pattern, and the decisions to settle first.

Connect the LMS and the protected-media system as two separate services that meet at a defined boundary. LTI 1.3 can carry the launch from the LMS into a video tool where both sides support it, but it does not encrypt media or issue DRM licenses. Multi-DRM playback works when the playback service handles packaging, player delivery, and license acquisition, and the LMS handles only course context and the launch.

Where LTI 1.3 fits and where it stops

The LMS owns the learning context: the course, the enrollment, and the act of opening a tool. The playback system owns media access, the player, DRM-specific packaging, and license delivery. Keeping those responsibilities apart is the core of the pattern, because each one fails in different ways and is fixed by different people.

The 1EdTech Consortium’s Learning Tools Interoperability Core Specification 1.3, issued 16 April 2019, describes its purpose this way: “The Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)® specification allows Learning Management Systems (LMS) or platforms to integrate remote tools and content in a standard way.” The specification includes a security model for authenticating messages and services between platform and tool. That covers the launch. It does not cover what happens after the learner’s browser asks for a stream, so a successful launch tells you nothing about whether that device can decrypt the video.

The six-step integration pattern

The sequence below assumes you can configure the playback tool and the LMS together. Each step creates a boundary that needs its own test.

1. Register the playback service as an LMS tool

Where both systems support it, register the playback service as an LTI 1.3 tool and use LTI 1.3 for the launch. Kaltura’s LTI support article, updated 31 May 2026, gives a vendor example of this across Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Moodle, and Sakai. Treat it as one implementation. Registration screens differ by LMS and version, and the article does not guarantee that every LMS configuration works without administrator setup.

2. Validate the launch and start the tool session

The tool must validate each platform-originated launch under the LTI implementation you chose. Kaltura’s implementation uses an OIDC launch, signed JWT messages, and JWKS key rotation, which makes a useful checklist:

  • Follow the LMS’s own LTI requirements wherever they differ from a vendor example.

3. Resolve course identity and media entitlement separately

The launch can tell the tool which course and user are involved. That is not the same as permission to play a specific asset. Keep the mapping from LMS user and course to playback entitlement as an explicit decision. The LTI launch flow and the media license flow are separate, and the published material does not prescribe a single entitlement-token design, so the handoff between them is yours to design. Decide which personal data crosses the boundary, and send only what the playback tool needs to make its authorization decision.

4. Package the asset for every DRM system you need

Common Encryption lets one encrypted asset carry system-specific DRM information, which avoids keeping a separate encrypted copy for each DRM system. Microsoft’s PlayReady documentation describes including multiple DRM headers and explains the content-key and license-server flow. DASH protection signaling can likewise carry multiple DRM descriptors. Common Encryption reduces duplication; it does not remove the need for DRM-specific signaling, compatible clients, or license services.

5. Play through a compatible player and acquire the license

At playback, the player identifies which DRM information the client can use and requests the matching license. The DRM client then uses the content key in that license to decrypt and render the media. Playback breaks when any of these disagree: the media format, the encryption mode, the player, the device, the license policy, or the DRM support available on that platform. Packaging for several DRM systems does not guarantee that every learner’s device will play.

6. Test the real device matrix

List the browsers, operating systems, mobile apps, and devices your learners actually use. Run each combination through the launch, the license request, and playback, and record the step where any failure occurs. The standards describe components; they do not supply a current compatibility matrix for your deployment, so the matrix is one you build and maintain.

What each layer owns

Most integration problems come from one layer assuming another layer handles a job. The table below separates the responsibilities.

One course video, several DRM systems

The three systems most often named together are distinct, each with its own platform and implementation constraints. A single “DRM supported” line in a vendor brochure will not settle whether a course plays on every device your learners use.

Decisions to settle before you build

Settle these questions before you choose a vendor or write integration code. Each one changes the work in the steps above.

  • Whether your LMS supports LTI 1.3, and which LTI Advantage services you need.
  • Which browsers, mobile apps, and devices learners use.
  • Which DRM systems, media formats, encryption schemes, and manifest signaling you must support.
  • Whether packaging, key management, and license serving will be self-operated or managed by a vendor.
  • How the launch identity maps to playback entitlement, and which personal data is exchanged.
  • Credential provisioning, key rotation, support load, and how failures will be diagnosed.
  • Total cost, based on current written quotes from shortlisted providers. The vendor and standards documentation cited here state no prices or hosting costs, so treat any budget as provisional until those quotes exist.

The LTI 1.3 specification has no adoption or performance statistics attached to it in the cited material, so no adoption figure is offered here. Plan from the decisions above rather than from market size claims.
