The project describes it as “A complete terminal user interface (TUI) for LDAP.” It documents directory browsing, recursive searches, object management and several AD-oriented views and editors; behavior on non-Active Directory servers depends on the selected backend and the server itself.
What Godap does
Godap presents directory work in a terminal interface rather than a graphical one. Its documented workflows include browsing directory objects on demand, running recursive searches, saving searches, looking up groups and users, and exporting selected directory subtrees as JSON. It can also create, edit, remove, move and rename directory objects or attributes.

Some capabilities are specifically oriented toward Active Directory: the project documents interactive userAccountControl editing, DACL viewing and editing, basic ADIDNS viewing and editing, GPO viewing, and searches for deleted or recycled objects. Treat these as AD-focused functions, not a promise of equivalent support on every LDAP server.
Active Directory focus and other LDAP servers
The project identifies Active Directory as Godap’s main focus. It documents a backend selector for adapting the interface to other directory-server flavors: choosing a backend can hide features that do not apply and adapt others. Release information also describes backend support and OpenLDAP-like group lookups using the basic backend. That supports a qualified claim of broader LDAP use, not universal feature parity.

Before relying on a particular operation outside Active Directory, check whether the selected backend and target server support it. This matters especially for AD-specific object types, attributes and views.
Authentication and encrypted connections
The README documents password, NTLM hash, Kerberos ticket and client-certificate authentication. Certificates may be supplied in PEM or PKCS#12 form. For transport security, Godap documents both LDAPS, which starts with an encrypted connection, and StartTLS, which upgrades a connection.

There is also an option to skip TLS certificate verification. Doing so removes an important check that the client is connected to a server presenting a trusted certificate; it should not be treated as a routine workaround. Prefer resolving certificate trust or configuration problems, and use any verification bypass only when you understand and accept the risk.

Installation options
The project README documents installing through Go/source tooling and lists community packages for Homebrew, Alpine Linux, and Arch Linux AUR. Community packages can lag behind upstream releases, and the project does not establish current package versions here. Check the package’s release information before installing if version currency matters.

If you prefer a graphical interface, Apache Directory Studio is another directory-tooling option described by the Apache Directory project, particularly designed for ApacheDS. That description alone does not establish which tool is better for a given environment. Compare the interface you want, your target server and backend requirements, the operations you need, platform support, and release currency.
