Choose Shopify if commerce is the core of your business and you need more plan choices for staff, reporting, sales channels, or retail operations. Neither is universally better; your region, payment provider, catalog, and expected sales determine the practical fit and total cost.
How to choose between GoDaddy and Shopify
Start with the kind of operation you are building. GoDaddy’s reviewed Website Builder materials combine a general business website with ecommerce, marketing, and booking features. Shopify’s plans are organized around running a store, with options for selling online, in person, and through social channels. Those are vendor-described features, not independent findings about ease of use or performance.

- Consider GoDaddy if the site itself is central—for example, a local business presenting services and taking bookings or selling a modest product range—and you value bundled builder and marketing functions.
- Consider Shopify if you expect to grow a commerce operation, sell across online and physical channels, or need more staff accounts and reporting as the business expands.
Before deciding, list your expected catalog size, sales channels, payment provider, monthly sales, number of staff who need access, retail needs, and country. A plan that looks cheaper by subscription price may cost more once payment and optional service fees are included.

| Platform and plan | Price shown | Payment and transaction fees stated |
|---|---|---|
| GoDaddy Commerce, US | $20.99/month with an annual-plan offer | 0% online store transaction fee; 2.7% + 30¢ ecommerce credit-card fee |
| Shopify Basic, US | $29/month equivalent with annual billing; $39/month with monthly billing | With Shopify Payments, standard online card rate starts at 2.9% + 30¢; listed third-party provider fee is 2% |
| Shopify Grow, US | $79/month equivalent with annual billing; $105/month with monthly billing | With Shopify Payments, standard online card rate starts at 2.7% + 30¢; listed third-party provider fee is 1% |
| Shopify Advanced, US | $299/month equivalent with annual billing; $399/month with monthly billing | With Shopify Payments, standard online card rate starts at 2.5% + 30¢; listed third-party provider fee is 0.6% |
| Shopify Plus, US | From $2,300/month | With Shopify Payments, standard online card rate starts at 2.25% + 30¢; listed third-party provider fee is 0.2% |
Card rates and eligibility can vary by market and payment type. Shopify’s third-party transaction fees apply in specified circumstances, including use of a third-party payment provider; applicable rules can also depend on order payment method and when the store was created. Consult the current regional fee schedule rather than assuming the listed figures apply to every merchant.
Why the subscription price is not the total cost
Estimate annual subscription charges plus the processing fees on your actual sales, any third-party transaction fees, and paid options you need. Shopify’s help guidance says the upgrade break-even point depends on sales, location, and whether Shopify Payments is used. Lower rates at a higher plan do not automatically make that plan cheaper overall.

GoDaddy’s UK Online Store page displayed £14.99/month in its pricing text and says customers can configure a store before paying, then upgrade to its Ecommerce plan when ready to sell. That UK offer should not be combined with the US Commerce price as if they were the same plan or market.
How do store size and sales channels compare?
GoDaddy’s UK Online Store page says a store can hold up to 5,000 products, with up to 10 images per product. Shopify’s US pricing page describes unlimited products on its listed plans. Because these limits come from different regional pages, check the terms for your own market before relying on the comparison.
Rank #3
GoDaddy describes marketplace integrations and order-management tools. Shopify describes selling online, in person, and on social channels. Make a short list of the channels you will actually use and confirm that their integrations are available where your business operates; a long list of possible channels is not useful if it does not match your customers or region.
Which platform suits a team or physical shop?
Shopify’s US plan materials describe a progression in staff and reporting features: Grow includes five user accounts and added reporting, while Advanced includes up to 15 accounts, more advanced reports, and international tools. Shopify’s plan-selection guidance frames Basic for new businesses, Grow for businesses with consistent sales and greater reporting or staff needs, and Advanced for high-volume merchants or migrations.

Shopify includes basic in-person selling; its pricing page lists POS Pro as an additional-cost option for more advanced retail functions, with location pricing described on the plan page. GoDaddy’s reviewed materials mention appointments, payments, pickup, and POS-related services in some regional contexts. If you run a permanent shop, compare the specific needs that matter—staff access, inventory handling, returns, and location-level workflows—against the features and add-on costs offered in your market.
Which is cheaper for a small business?
There is no reliable universal answer from subscription prices alone. The dated US examples show a GoDaddy annual-plan Commerce offer at $20.99/month and Shopify Basic at $29/month equivalent with annual billing. But payment rates, third-party fees, billing terms, taxes, promotions, optional retail tools, and sales volume affect the real total. A merchant using a different payment provider or selling at higher volume may reach a different result than a business comparing only the monthly subscription.

Decision checklist
- Choose GoDaddy as the stronger starting point if you want a general small-business site with a straightforward store or booking setup and do not currently need extensive commerce operations.
- Choose Shopify as the stronger candidate if you are building a commerce-led business that needs multiple selling channels, a path to richer reporting and team access, or more involved retail and international operations.
- Verify catalog limits, available payment methods, integrations, and POS features in your country.
- Do not treat vendor claims about conversion or scale as proof of what your own store will achieve. The available feature and pricing descriptions do not establish comparative ease of use, uptime, SEO results, support quality, or sales performance.
