GO Feature Flag Retries: 4 Signals to Check for Duplicate Writes

GO Feature Flag retries retained webhook event data after failed HTTP calls, but that alone does not prove duplicate writes. Check these four signals to distinguish retries from new evaluations.

If a destination appears to contain duplicate GO Feature Flag events, first separate a retried delivery from a new flag evaluation. GO Feature Flag’s webhook exporter documentation says failed HTTP calls retain event data in memory and retry it on a later flush interval or when the in-memory event limit is reached. That makes retries worth investigating, but does not prove a duplicate was written or establish exactly-once delivery.

Four signals to investigate

1. A failed webhook request followed by another send

Check exporter and receiver logs for a failed HTTP request, then look for a later send containing the retained event data. The documented retry behavior is specific to the webhook exporter: retained data is retried when the next flush interval arrives or the maximum in-memory event count is reached. See the webhook exporter documentation.

2. Similar event fields in the destination

Compare the event’s contextKind, userKey, creationDate, flag key, variation, value, default, optional configuration version, and source. These fields can help you find records to investigate, but the documented schema does not define a unique event ID. A matching user, flag, or result is not proof of duplicate delivery: separate evaluations may produce similar records. The example schema records timestamps in seconds. See flag usage tracking.

3. Repetition aligned with flushes or batch thresholds

GO Feature Flag documents webhook calls triggered by FlushInterval or MaxEventInMemory. Compare the configured values with the timing and size of observed sends. A burst near a flush or threshold is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof that crossing the threshold caused duplicate writes.

4. A new evaluation rather than a retried delivery

GO Feature Flag exports evaluation events, with one feature event corresponding to a flag evaluation. A second evaluation can therefore create another event even when transport delivery worked normally. Check application and evaluation logs to establish whether the records correspond to separate evaluations before treating them as a retried batch. See flag usage tracking and the exporter concepts documentation.

Trace the evaluation path

If your application uses the OpenFeature Go provider, determine whether it runs in INPROCESS or REMOTE mode. In-process mode retrieves configuration and evaluates locally; remote mode evaluates through the relay proxy and can use client-side caching, with polling for flag changes. This identifies which application, proxy, and exporter logs may contain evidence about the event’s origin. The Go provider package documentation describes the modes.

Mode Where evaluation happens Request path to check Caching
INPROCESS Locally, after configuration retrieval Application and its configuration-fetch path Not stated here as a mode-specific guarantee
REMOTE Through the relay proxy Application, relay proxy, and exporter path Can use client-side caching

Check the exporter and receiver separately

Do not assume that every GO Feature Flag exporter has the webhook’s retry behavior. Exporters differ by destination and delivery model; establish whether the configured path is streaming or synchronous, or buffered or asynchronous, and inspect its actual settings. The exporter concepts documentation describes the available exporter approaches.

  • Confirm the destination and the exporter type actually deployed.
  • Record the configured flush interval and batch or in-memory event threshold where applicable.
  • Compare exporter send attempts with receiver acknowledgments, errors, and writes.
  • Check the receiver’s own behavior for retries, acknowledgment timing, transactions, and idempotency; those guarantees depend on that system and are not established by GO Feature Flag’s webhook documentation.

What the documentation does—and does not—guarantee

The reviewed webhook documentation describes retaining event data in memory after a failed HTTP call and retrying later. It does not promise exactly-once delivery or describe a documented idempotency key that deduplicates receiver writes. The event fields on the tracking page likewise do not establish a unique event identifier. Consequently, neither a retry nor matching fields alone proves that the destination has a duplicate; verify the delivery sequence against evaluation and receiver records.

Documentation versions differ: the webhook retry page is v1.52.0, exporter concepts are v1.55.3, and the landing page displayed v1.56.0. Compare the documentation with the version actually deployed before applying version-sensitive defaults or operational assumptions.
