The tutorial confirms that task creation returns a taskId; it does not establish exact task-state names or full follow-up command syntax.
What “without ADB” means in this workflow
In the tutorial’s cloud-phone route, Claude Code sends a task to Airtap over HTTPS. Airtap’s on-device agent carries out the requested actions screen by screen and posts progress messages. Claude Code polls those messages and reports back. Because the receiver is hosted, this route does not require a locally connected Android phone, cable, emulator, or ADB setup. The tutorial also describes linking a physical Android phone through Airtap’s Autopilot app. That is an alternative receiver, not a prerequisite for the hosted-phone example. No particular phone model or accessory is specified.
What you need, according to the tutorial
- Claude Code or another supported agent.
- Python 3, plus the
requestsandpython-dotenvpackages. - An Airtap account, a personal access token, and the Airtap skill.
- Airtap’s hosted receiver, or a physical Android device linked through Autopilot.
The tutorial’s Claude Code example adds Airtap’s plugin marketplace and installs the plugin. It then configures the personal access token in an environment variable or the skill’s .env file. These are the tutorial’s September 2026 setup directions, not a guarantee of Airtap’s current installation process. It warns that a stale value in .env can override a shell variable, and advises against pasting the personal token into chat. How task creation and progress work
- Install and configure the skill. Follow the current Airtap skill instructions for installation and token setup. The tutorial’s example uses Claude Code’s plugin marketplace and a local token configuration.
- Choose a receiver. The tutorial uses the hosted cloud receiver by default; it also describes connecting a physical phone with Autopilot.
- Describe the task in plain language. Be precise about the desired outcome and any boundaries. The tutorial’s sample requests include checking a Play Store listing without installing the app, finding nearby pharmacies and their closing times, and counting recent unread email senders without opening or archiving messages. These illustrate the tutorial’s approach; they are not independently tested task guarantees.
- Create the task and retain its ID. The CLI creates the task for a receiver and returns a
taskId. Later task operations use that ID. - Poll for progress and review the result. The tutorial describes Claude Code polling task progress messages and relaying the result. It does not provide enough verified detail to prescribe exact polling commands, intervals, or recovery behavior.
What is known—and not known—about task states and follow-ups
The tutorial establishes a basic lifecycle: submit a task, receive its taskId, and poll progress messages. It does not substantiate the exact state enum names, a complete follow-up command format, or the semantics of retries, cancellation, or completion. Do not assume familiar labels such as “queued,” “running,” or “done,” or copy command flags from an unrelated integration. For a safer first task, use a narrow, observable request and spell out actions the agent must not take—for example, inspect a listing but do not install it. The tutorial’s examples demonstrate this style, but the available information does not establish a universal permission model or guarantee that every boundary can be enforced.

Android Developers summarizes its preview this way: “The Android Computer Control framework allows OEM-preloaded AI assistants to perform task automation on selected apps installed on the device (“target apps”).” The six-app maximum applies to a Computer Control session, not to Airtap.

Practical trade-offs and limits
- Less device setup, more service dependency: the hosted receiver avoids local ADB setup, but requires Airtap’s service, skill and account token.
- Task handoff rather than low-level scripting: you describe an outcome instead of issuing ADB commands for each interaction. The tutorial does not provide measured reliability, completion rates, or a comparative test against ADB.
- Progress is mediated: the documented pattern is task-ID-based polling of progress messages, rather than direct observation of a local device session. Detailed state transitions and recovery steps are not specified in the tutorial extract.
- Terms may change: the tutorial says Airtap has a per-account daily limit that resets at 00:00 UTC and that a paid plan is not required. Those are time-sensitive claims from September 2026, not independently verified current terms; check Airtap’s current materials before relying on them.
