For a GMSL camera link, pixel mode sends the CSI-2 payload and rebuilds its framing at the receiver; tunnel mode forwards the CSI-2 packet structure, preserving the source CSI-2 CRC end to end on supported components. Pixel mode can offer more stream-handling flexibility, while tunnel mode favors retaining and checking the original CSI-2 data. Neither is a universal performance upgrade: choose based on the exact serializer and deserializer, PHYs, routing, aggregation needs, and processor input.
What pixel and tunnel mode mean in a GMSL system
GMSL—Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link—is Analog Devices’ serializer/deserializer technology for carrying high-speed video over a cable. In a camera system, the serializer is near the image sensor and the deserializer is near the processor or other sink. Pixel and tunnel modes describe how CSI-2 video is handled across that link; they are not interchangeable capabilities of every GMSL product. The distinctions here apply to CSI-2-capable components, not GMSL1. Check the exact generation and part documentation before designing around either mode. Analog Devices’ mode overview

What happens to the CSI-2 data in each mode?
Pixel mode extracts the payload and reconstructs CSI-2 downstream
The serializer checks the incoming CSI-2 CRC, removes the CSI-2 header and footer, and converts the payload into pixel data packets for transmission over GMSL. At the receiving end, the deserializer rebuilds CSI-2 framing and generates a new header, footer, and CRC. The original CSI-2 CRC therefore does not reach the processor unchanged. This framing reconstruction can enable packet-level changes on supported devices.

Tunnel mode forwards the CSI-2 structure
Tunnel mode repacketizes the CSI-2 stream for transport over GMSL without converting it into pixel data for processing. On supported parts, the source CSI-2 CRC can reach the processor unchanged, while GMSL-level CRC protects the serializer-to-deserializer link. Some devices also offer deserializer-side inline CSI-2 CRC checking and error reporting. Those capabilities are part-specific; consult the relevant user guide for their exact behavior. How do the modes differ in practice?
| Design consideration | Pixel mode | Tunnel mode |
|---|---|---|
| Video handling | Sends pixel payload; the deserializer reconstructs CSI-2 framing. | Forwards the CSI-2 packet structure without pixel-based processing. |
| CSI-2 CRC | The serializer checks the incoming CRC; the deserializer generates a new one. | Preserves the original CSI-2 CRC end to end on supported parts; some parts can check it inline. |
| PHY translation | Can support translation such as D-PHY to C-PHY when the device supports it. | Generally retains the original PHY; Analog Devices identifies MAX96724-family exceptions. |
| Virtual channels | Reassignment is available on supported devices. | Device dependent; sources may need unique channel IDs. |
| Aggregation | Streams can be aggregated when the relevant ports use the same mode. | Streams can be aggregated when the relevant ports use the same mode. |
| Mixed-mode aggregation | The cited implementations do not aggregate pixel-mode and tunnel-mode streams together. | |
| Configuration | Both endpoints must support and be configured for the same mode; configuration may use register writes or device-specific default pin settings. | |
| Board layout | The mode choice alone does not meaningfully change schematic or PCB layout, according to the Analog Devices overview. | |
These are architectural distinctions, not a measured performance comparison. The cited material does not establish a general percentage gain, latency improvement, or bandwidth advantage for either mode. Analog Devices’ overview and its pixel-versus-tunneling FAQ describe the tradeoffs qualitatively.
Which mode should you choose?
Prefer tunnel mode when preserving the original CSI-2 stream matters
Analog Devices recommends tunnel mode where possible. It is a reasonable fit when the system needs the original CSI-2 structure and CRC to remain visible at the processor, and the selected components support the required PHY and routing. It does not guarantee that every tunnel-mode implementation offers the same monitoring, translation, or virtual-channel features.

Choose pixel mode when its flexibility solves a specific need
Pixel mode may be necessary if the chosen hardware does not support tunnel mode. It can also suit a design that needs supported pixel-mode capabilities such as virtual-channel or data-type editing, or certain PHY translations. Confirm those functions for the exact serializer and deserializer rather than assuming they are common to all parts.

- Identify both endpoints. Record the exact serializer and deserializer part numbers, GMSL generation, and current datasheet or user-guide revisions. Do not infer mode support from a product family name.
- Confirm the source and sink interfaces. Check the camera’s CSI-2 PHY and the processor’s accepted PHY, lane configuration, and stream requirements. If translation is needed, verify support in the specific devices.
- Map virtual channels and data types. Determine whether channels need reassignment, whether each source requires a unique channel ID, and whether the relevant components can perform the needed edits.
- Plan aggregation and routing. Verify that the streams connected to ports being aggregated use the same mode and that the deserializer output routing and processor inputs can carry the intended streams.
- Configure both ends identically. Use the mode and settings documented for each part; do not assume the serializer and deserializer default to compatible configurations.
- Validate integrity reporting. Decide whether the system needs the sensor’s original CSI-2 CRC at the processor, and check what CRC checking and error reporting the selected parts implement.
What a mode mismatch looks like
The serializer and deserializer must both support and be configured for the same video mode. If they do not match, video does not pass. The Analog Devices overview says supported peripheral interfaces such as I²C, UART, and GPIO are not affected by this video-mode mismatch, which can help separate a video-path configuration problem from a control-channel problem.
