That opening record is not a final agency finding that a defect exists, nor does it establish the investigation’s full later scope.
What NHTSA’s initial investigation says
NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24011 on April 11, 2024, to examine electronic brake module component failure reports involving model-year 2023 Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. The agency’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said it received multiple Early Warning Reporting field reports alleging loss of brake boost assist, a hard brake pedal, and a “Brake System Failure” message at startup or while driving. NHTSA said GM verified the field reports. NHTSA’s PE24011 opening resume summarizes those reports and GM’s account.

What GM reported about the failure mechanism
In the opening resume, NHTSA records GM’s statement that the electronic brake control module, also called eBoost, has an internal spindle that can fracture during an anti-lock braking system (ABS) event. GM described possible consequences as loss of brake assist, speed limitation, and some loss of ABS functionality. These are the manufacturer’s reported mechanism and consequences, not independent findings by NHTSA.

#1 Best Overall
- Precise replacement - cylinder housing is constructed to match the casting material of the original part and ensure similar performance
- Durable design - all rubber components are made of high-quality EPDM compound for resistance to glycol-based brake fluid
- 100% new - made entirely of new materials, not remanufactured, to ensure highest quality and safety
- Strict specifications - made to meet rigorous SAE International standards
- Ensure fit - to make sure this part fits your exact vehicle, input your make, model and trim level into the garage tool
Why the investigation is a verification story
An investigation’s opening is a fact-finding step, not a final determination that a safety defect exists or a decision to order a recall. NHTSA explains the stages and public records on its investigations page. For this case, the central questions are what component failed, under which operating conditions, how the failure affects braking and ABS, which vehicles share the relevant hardware and production characteristics, and what evidence shows whether any response addresses the risk.
The available initial resume establishes the reported symptoms and GM’s explanation as recorded by ODI. It does not establish a completed independent finding about the defect or the full later scope. NHTSA’s investigation record is where publicly available case documents are added as they become available; the current record is needed to confirm any later scope, findings, or incident counts.

- One Man Brake Bleeding: No more shouting instructions or messy oil spills! This one-man brake bleeder effortlessly flushes out old fluid while drawing in fresh oil, clearing trapped air for firmer, faster-replying brakes with every press.
- Adapter Description: 43.5mm for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Plymouth; 45mm for most European cars; 49.5mm for some Mazdas and most late-model GM vehicles; and 50.7mm for most Hyundais. Please measure your vehicle’s master cylinder before purchasing to ensure a proper fit.
- Improved Sealing: Featuring upgraded adapter caps and an ultra-thick, corrosion-resistant plastic bottle, this kit ensures a secure, leak-proof seal that prevents spills and guarantees mess-free brake bleeding.
- Semi-Transparent Design: The translucent body lets you easily monitor the fluid level during bleeding, so you can see exactly how much has been discharged at a glance.
- Usage Guide: Tighten the adapter onto the master cylinder reservoir and pump to 10 psi to pressurize. Connect the rubber hose to the bleeder screw, press the brake pedal to flush fluid and air bubbles. Repeat until clean fluid flows.
Do not confuse this case with a separate Equinox EV recall
A distinct NHTSA recall report, 25V-012, concerns certain 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV AWD vehicles. GM identified an incorrectly set brake system control module software calibration on affected AWD models without Super Cruise; the calibration could prevent adaptive cruise control from bringing the test vehicle to a complete stop as expected. GM’s safety authority decided to conduct a recall on January 9, 2025. This is a software-calibration issue, not evidence of a connection to the Lyriq eBoost spindle-fracture investigation. See the NHTSA recall report.

How Lyriq owners can check their vehicle
- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN), typically on the driver-side dashboard near the windshield or on registration and insurance documents.
- Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup or use Cadillac’s recall page. Recall status is VIN- and campaign-dependent.
- If a recall appears, follow the notice’s instructions and contact an authorized Cadillac dealer about the repair. NHTSA says unrepaired recalls appear in its VIN search and recalls do not expire.
- If the vehicle displays a brake-system warning or develops a hard pedal or reduced brake assist, contact an authorized service provider promptly. Do not assume that a generic diagnostic tool, aftermarket part, or software update is an established remedy for the condition described in PE24011.
