In a conversation, the file may belong to an earlier, collapsed message—or the paperclip may relate to an image embedded in the message body. Open the message carrying the icon before assuming the attachment is missing.
First, check every message in the conversation
Gmail groups related messages into a conversation, but an attachment belongs to the specific message that included it. A reply may appear in the same thread without repeating files sent earlier. Gmail Help Community guidance recommends expanding the messages in the conversation and checking the one marked with the paperclip.

- Open the conversation.
- Expand each individual message, including earlier messages that are collapsed.
- Look for the paperclip on a message header, then inspect that specific message for its attachment.

If you have expanded the relevant message and see no separate file, the message may contain an image embedded in its body. A Gmail Help Community Diamond Product Expert says embedded images can account for the paperclip too. That is community guidance, not a guarantee that every paperclip marks an embedded image. If the icon or inbox preview looks wrong
Distinguish the paperclip on a message from an attachment preview in the inbox. Community discussions report that inbox density and Conversation View can affect how attachments or icons appear, but the reports are user-specific and do not establish a universal setting or fix. Check the current Gmail settings and compare the conversation itself with the inbox preview rather than relying on the preview alone.

If Gmail’s display seems to be malfunctioning
When messages are expanded but the interface still appears inconsistent, try these community troubleshooting steps. They are not guaranteed fixes.
- Update your browser.
- Clear its cache and cookies.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions.
- Test Gmail in Incognito or Guest mode.
- Compare another supported browser, device, or Gmail account.

If the attachment will not open or download
A file that is visible but will not open or download is a different problem from a paperclip with no visible file. Google’s official Gmail attachment guidance identifies several checks:
- Browser or proxy: Try a supported or alternate browser, and consider whether a proxy is affecting access.
- Network filtering: A network administrator or internet provider may block
mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com, which can prevent attachments from being available. - File type: Gmail blocks some file types, including executable files such as
.exe. - Shared storage: Google storage is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. If the account has reached its storage limit, Google says it cannot send or receive attachments.
Check account limits if you are sending or receiving files
For personal Gmail accounts, Google states a 25 MB attachment limit. When the total attachment size exceeds that limit, Gmail removes the attachment and adds it as a Google Drive link in the email. Work and school account limits are set by the Workspace administrator, so contact that administrator about account-specific limits. Google’s attachment help page covers the limit and related restrictions.
