Open Drafts to find it and continue writing. If you discard a draft, Google says it cannot be recovered, so use discard only when you are sure you no longer need the message.
Where Gmail saves drafts
On a computer, choose Compose and start writing. Gmail automatically saves the message in progress under Drafts. To return to it, open the Drafts label and select the message.

Google’s help guidance does not specify an exact autosave interval. Avoid relying on a particular number of seconds before a new message is saved; if the text is especially important, check Drafts before closing the compose window or switching devices.
Can you recover a discarded draft?
Google’s missing-message guidance says a discarded draft cannot be recovered. Do not assume a discarded draft will be available in Trash. If you want to keep a message but are not ready to send it, leave it as a draft rather than choosing the discard option.

What to check when a draft is missing
Start with the Drafts label, then check the account and its mail settings. Google recommends reviewing these possibilities:
- Shared storage: Gmail storage is shared with Google Drive and Google Photos. If the account is out of storage, that may affect mail activity.
- Trash and Spam: Look in both folders in case the message was moved.
- Other devices or mail clients: Check other synced devices and email applications. An action in another client may have changed or deleted the message.
- Filters: Review filters that could move or remove messages.
- Forwarding and POP/IMAP: Review these settings if the account is connected to another mail service or client.
These checks can help identify why a message is not where you expect, but they do not make a discarded draft recoverable.
Drafts, templates, and Google Docs email drafts
These options serve different purposes. Use a draft for one message in progress, a template for reusable text, or a Docs email draft when document-based collaboration is useful.

Use a Gmail template for repeated text
Templates are reusable starting text, not a substitute for an individual message in progress. On a computer, turn on Templates in Gmail settings, compose the text, and save it as a template. You can later insert a saved template or overwrite it with updated text. Google warns that a deleted template cannot be recovered.

Draft an email in Google Docs
On a computer, insert the Email draft building block in Docs, or type @email. Add recipients and message text in the document, where collaborators can work on it. When ready, preview the draft in Gmail and make any final changes there. Google’s documented Gmail preview flow requires the Google Account language to be English.
A Docs email draft is a document-based composition workflow; it should not be confused with a message already saved under Gmail’s Drafts label.

Google’s offline instructions specify Chrome, and Gmail offline does not work in an Incognito window. If you send a message while offline, Gmail saves it in a new Outbox and sends it automatically after the connection returns. This describes the queue for a message sent offline; it is not a general backup or guarantee that every interruption preserves every unsent draft.
