To give one person a distinct sound on iPhone, open Contacts, select their name, tap Edit, then tap Ringtone or Text Tone and choose a sound. These are separate settings, so you can customize calls, messages, or both.
Set a ringtone for one contact
- Open the Contacts app and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Choose the sound you want, then save the contact if prompted.
Set a text tone for one contact
- In Contacts, select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Text Tone.
- Choose a sound, then save the contact if prompted.
Apple’s support instructions describe both choices as options in the contact card’s edit screen. Labels and screens can vary by software version.

Choose a built-in sound, make one, or buy one

Keep a contact’s sound separate from your defaults
A ringtone or text tone selected on a contact card applies to that person. To change the general sounds instead, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and select the sound category, such as Ringtone or Text Tone. Changing a default is not the same as assigning a different sound to one contact.
