You can let a local LLM inspect or operate a server safely only by limiting what its tools and server-side identity can do. Keep the model away from personal SSH credentials, put a default-deny authorization layer between model requests and SSH, and enforce least privilege again on the server. A prompt saying “only restart this service” is not a security control.
Decide exactly what the LLM is allowed to do
Start with a named task, not a general request to “administer the server.” Define the permitted operation, target host, account, arguments, whether it changes state, and what requires a person’s approval. A useful first scope might be reading the status of one named service or collecting a bounded diagnostic. Restarting that service is a separate, write-capable permission.

Assume anything the model reads could contain hostile instructions. Logs, issue descriptions, web pages, source files, and tool descriptions can all include text that tries to redirect the agent. Treat that content as data, never as authority to expand its permissions. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and its LLM06:2025 Excessive Agency guidance both emphasize limiting tools and authority to what a task needs.

Do not expose a generic run_shell(command) tool if the job can be done with specific operations. Give the agent structured actions such as read_service_status(service) or restart_service(service). The broker—not the model—should decide whether a request is allowed.

- Validate each operation against a strict schema. Reject unknown fields, unexpected values, and malformed arguments.
- Bind each request to the initiating human or session and an authorized target. Do not trust a hostname or account just because the model supplied it.
- Use a server-side allowlist for permitted operations and arguments. Deny by default.
- Keep read-only access separate from write-capable access, ideally with distinct identities and policies.
- Require human approval for destructive, privileged, externally visible, or difficult-to-reverse actions.
If shell execution is genuinely necessary, route it through an isolated broker under a restricted operating-system identity. Validate the requested operation before connecting to the server; do not turn model-generated text into a shell command by interpolation. OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance treats tool misuse and excessive authority as risks requiring controls beyond the model’s own reasoning.
Restrict the SSH account and key on the server
Create a dedicated, non-root account for the workflow. Grant it only the operating-system permissions needed for its approved task. Where a narrowly scoped command can do the job, avoid giving the account an interactive shell or broad administrative privileges. NISTIR 7966 recommends limiting privileged SSH access to cases where it is necessary and using command restrictions on authorized keys where possible.

OpenSSH’s authorized_keys format supports the restrict option, which disables port, agent, and X11 forwarding, PTY allocation, and execution of ~/.ssh/rc. It also supports a command= option for forcing a particular command. For example, the OpenSSH manual shows the syntax restrict, command="dump /home"; that is a syntax example, not a recommended command for an LLM. A production wrapper must validate every accepted parameter and must not pass untrusted strings into a shell command.

For unattended access, the Australian Signals Directorate’s March 2024 Information Security Manual also advises restricting source addresses, disabling unneeded forwarding and console access, and using a forced command with parameter checking. Apply those controls in ways that match your actual connection path and threat model.

Keep credentials out of the model’s reach
Never put a private key or long-lived secret in a prompt, an agent-readable file, or an environment variable visible to the model’s execution context. Provision a distinct SSH identity through an administrator-controlled process. That makes its use attributable and lets you revoke it without disrupting a human’s personal access. Prefer short-lived, task-scoped credentials where your environment supports them; inventory the purpose of each key, review access periodically, and revoke or rotate it when the task or trust relationship ends.
Avoid forwarding your personal ssh-agent into a model-controlled environment. Forwarding does not copy the private key, but a process on the forwarding host can use the agent to authenticate. OpenSSH destination constraints can limit where a key may be used, but they do not make an attacker-controlled forwarding host safe: the forwarded agent may still be usable there. The safer default is not to delegate the operator’s agent.

Choose between a forced command and a broker
Both approaches still need restricted operating-system permissions and downstream checks. The choice is about where to express the task boundary and how much flexibility the workflow needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Approach | Best fit | Main control point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forced-command SSH key | A fixed task that maps cleanly to one operation with tightly checked arguments | The server-side forced-command wrapper, plus the account’s operating-system permissions | Simple and narrow when the task is fixed; less convenient when many distinct operations need mediation |
| Structured-operation broker | Several defined tasks, distinct read/write permissions, or a human-approval workflow | The broker’s schemas, authorization rules, target binding, and approval process | More flexible, but the broker becomes a critical authorization component that needs review, isolation, and monitoring |
Do not treat either pattern as a substitute for the other layers. A broker can make an authorization mistake, and a forced command can be too permissive; the server account’s actual operating-system permissions remain decisive.

Require approval and make actions auditable
For each call, record the authenticated human or task, agent identity, operation, target host and account, authorization decision, any approval, and completion status. Keep logs useful for review without capturing private keys, tokens, or unnecessary sensitive prompt and response content. Review SSH keys and trust relationships and remove stale access. NISTIR 7966 recommends SSH key-use auditing and documenting and reviewing trust relationships; OWASP guidance likewise supports monitoring agent activity and high-risk decisions.
Make approval a real gate in the broker, not an instruction in the prompt. A reviewer should see what operation will run, against which host and account, and with which validated arguments before approving a consequential change.
Check the design before enabling access
- Write the scope: list allowed hosts, account, operations, argument ranges, and changes that require approval.
- Build the boundary: expose typed operations where possible; validate all inputs and bind requests to the initiating user and authorized target.
- Provision the identity: create a dedicated non-root account and distinct key, then grant only the operating-system permissions needed for the task.
- Constrain SSH: use a forced command and
restrictwhere appropriate; disable forwarding, PTY, and other session features unless the reviewed task requires them. - Test denials as well as allowed actions: confirm that an unknown operation, unapproved host, extra argument, or write action without approval is rejected.
- Review activity and access: check logs, key ownership, and trust relationships, and revoke credentials when no longer needed.
These recommendations reflect OWASP agent-security guidance, OpenSSH documentation, NISTIR 7966 (2015), and the Australian Signals Directorate’s March 2024 Information Security Manual. SSH option availability and behavior can depend on the operating system and installed OpenSSH version, so confirm the local manual before deployment. The guidance does not establish a quantified risk reduction for any one design.
