You can often keep a familiar Git workflow when moving a repository from GitHub to Forgejo, and Forgejo can discover workflow files in the existing .github/workflows directory. But that does not mean GitHub Actions will run unchanged: Forgejo explicitly says its Actions system is not designed for compatibility, and workflows may need adjustments for runners, environment differences, credentials, or integrations.
What “the same workflow” can mean
A move can preserve the location of your workflow files and much of the familiar YAML syntax without preserving every behavior around them. Forgejo checks .forgejo/workflows first; if that directory is absent, it looks in .github/workflows. You do not have to move files solely for Forgejo to discover them. Forgejo’s Actions user guide draws a clear distinction between familiarity and compatibility: “Forgejo Actions is designed to be familiar to users of GitHub Actions, but it is not designed to be compatible.” It adds that a migration will most likely require “some minimal tweaking.”

That is the safe general answer to whether a GitHub project can move without changing how you work: the repository layout and day-to-day Git operations may feel familiar, but the CI setup and connected services need verification. The documentation does not establish that every project—or any particular author’s projects—will work unchanged.
Check Actions before relying on them
Confirm a runner is available
Forgejo stores and coordinates workflow files; it does not execute the jobs itself. A suitable runner must be configured for the repository or supplied by the Forgejo instance. Without an available runner, a workflow file can be present and discoverable but still cannot run.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect the execution environment and workflow features
Runner environments can differ from GitHub-hosted environments. A migration guide notes that many Forgejo runners use a smaller Debian Bookworm environment than GitHub’s larger Ubuntu image. Differences in installed packages, tools, or system behavior can break jobs that assume a particular image.
The same guide flags other compatibility edges: some github context keys are missing, and job subkeys including permissions and continue-on-error may be ignored. OIDC configuration also differs; the guide describes Forgejo’s enable-openid-connect workflow key. These details can change across versions, so consult the official Forgejo Actions reference for the version you actually run before adapting a workflow.

Recreate credentials and integrations
A workflow may depend on more than its YAML: secrets, variables, external action references, webhooks, deploy keys, status checks, or bots that call GitHub APIs. These need individual review. In particular, do not assume secrets or webhooks are brought over with repository data, or that an action written for GitHub will behave identically on Forgejo.

Import the repository, then verify it
Forgejo’s repository migration flow can import a GitHub repository and, when enabled and authorized, more than Git history. The documented migration scope includes branches, tags, issues, pull requests and discussion history, labels, milestones, releases, and Git LFS objects. Availability depends on source permissions and the import configuration; check the imported copy rather than assuming every item transferred. The Fjord migration guide, updated September 17, 2026, documents the following practical sequence; its service and command-line examples are specific to Fjord, not bundled Forgejo features.

- Start a repository migration. In Forgejo, use the repository migration flow and choose GitHub as the source. A private source may require a GitHub personal access token with only the read access needed for the import. Revoke a temporary token after the migration.
- Allow the server-side import to finish. The import runs on the Forgejo server and can take time for a large repository.
- Clone the Forgejo copy into a clean directory. Verify the branches, tags, issues, pull requests, releases, and LFS files you rely on. Also check permissions and project settings that matter to your team.
- Update local remotes and dependent tools. Point your local repositories at Forgejo and find scripts or bots that still call GitHub APIs.
- Keep the GitHub source until verification is complete. Archive or lock it only after the imported copy and any required integrations have been checked.
Use a staged cutover for multiple projects
For a handful of repositories, the web migration flow is a straightforward starting point. For a larger collection, the Fjord guide recommends scripting batches; its examples use Fjord’s fj CLI, which should not be mistaken for a built-in Forgejo command.
If the GitHub repositories can stop receiving writes during the move, a one-time import may be enough. If you need a transition period, a pull mirror can keep a Forgejo copy synchronized; plan a final sync and cutover so the destination is current. A cautious migration can move repositories first, leave existing CI in place temporarily, then port and run workflows individually before switching the jobs over. This is a useful risk-reduction approach, not a guarantee that every project will migrate without interruption.

Decide what “moving off GitHub” includes
Moving the Git repository and its project history is not necessarily the same as replacing every service around it. Before retiring GitHub, identify which responsibilities and dependencies you are changing:
- Hosting operations: If you self-host Forgejo, you operate upgrades, backups, availability, and security settings. With managed hosting, establish exactly what the provider operates.
- CI runners: Determine who supplies and maintains them, which environment jobs receive, and whether it meets your workflows’ requirements.
- Connected services: Account for secrets, webhooks, package publishing, deploy keys, status checks, and API-dependent bots that may need reconfiguration.
- Transition control: Choose whether repositories can pause writes or need a mirroring window and final synchronization before cutover.
Forgejo’s user guide is the entry point for its repository migration, mirrors, and Actions documentation. Use the documentation for your installed version to confirm behavior; the directory fallback and compatibility details are not a substitute for testing your own workflows.
