To display VR gameplay on a monitor, use the mirroring or spectator-view feature supported by the headset, PC runtime, or game. There is no universal switch: a Quest game running on the headset, a Rift PC title, and a SteamVR game need not use the same method. First identify where the game is running, then choose the matching route below.
Choose the route that matches where the game runs
| Setup | Monitor-view route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Rift PC VR | Meta Compositor Mirror | Windows tool for showing content displayed in the Rift headset; offers eye-view and image options. |
| Meta Quest app running on the headset | Meta’s wired ADB stream, displayed in VLC | USB setup; the default image shows both eye views, with no audio mirroring and a stated 2 to 4 second delay. |
| SteamVR or another PC VR setup | Runtime or game’s mirror/spectator view, if available | Check the current instructions for that runtime or game; support varies. |
| PS VR2 connected to a Windows PC | Follow Sony’s PC setup and the applicable SteamVR/game view | Requires Sony’s PC adapter and specified connections and software; PC use has feature limits compared with PS5. |
These are different tasks: mirroring shows a spectator view of VR content, casting streams content between devices, and using a headset as a desktop display puts a computer desktop inside the headset. The routes here concern showing VR activity on a monitor, not a universal casting feature.

Show a Meta Rift PC-VR view with Compositor Mirror
Meta documents Compositor Mirror for content appearing in a Rift headset, including Oculus Home, Guardian boundaries, notifications, and transition fades. It supports experiences made with Meta’s native PC SDK or a game engine. On Windows, open C:Program FilesMeta HorizonSupportoculus-diagnosticsOculusMirror.exe. This is a Rift PC-VR tool, not a general Quest or SteamVR mirroring utility.

The default window is 1366 × 768 pixels and shows a rectilinear right-eye view, including Guardian and notification layers. Meta documents command-line options for changing the output:

The default field of view is narrower than what the headset wearer sees. Meta also documents FovTanAngleMultiplier for widening it. See Meta’s Compositor Mirror documentation for the current option details.
Mirror a Quest headset to a computer with ADB and VLC
For a Meta Quest app running on the headset, Meta documents a wired method that streams the headset display through Android Debug Bridge (ADB) for viewing in VLC. It requires developer mode, ADB installed on the computer, and a USB data connection compatible with the headset and computer. A cable’s connector alone does not establish that it supports data.

- Enable developer mode and install ADB. Follow Meta’s current setup instructions for the headset and computer.
- Connect the headset by USB. Use a compatible data cable, then approve any connection prompt shown in the headset.
- Verify the connection. In a terminal or command prompt, run
adb devicesand confirm that the headset appears. - Start Meta’s screen-record stream and open it in VLC. Use the commands and stream address in Meta’s Wired Mirroring with ADB instructions; the precise command sequence belongs to Meta’s documented setup.
- Improve the spectator framing if needed. The default image shows two lens-shaped eye views. VLC’s interactive zoom can crop one region for a more conventional single-view presentation.
This method does not mirror audio. Meta suggests connecting the headset’s headphone output to the computer as a workaround when audio is needed. Expect a 2 to 4 second delay, according to Meta; the image may also become pixelated if the stream remains connected but unused for a while.

For SteamVR, check the runtime or game mirror
With a PC-connected headset, look for a mirror or spectator view in the VR runtime or in the individual game. Availability and controls vary, so consult the current instructions for the software running the experience. A direct headset display connection does not necessarily duplicate the view to the monitor, and not every game is documented as offering a spectator view.

SteamVR’s Direct Mode is a separate display-detection setting. Steam explains that Direct Mode prevents the headset from being recognized as a monitor, and its troubleshooting guidance includes checking that the monitor and link box connect to the same GPU and to working ports. Those checks address headset detection or a black headset display; they are not a general procedure for mirroring the VR view onto a monitor. See Steam’s SteamVR display troubleshooting page.
Quest with Steam Link is PC-to-headset streaming
Meta’s Steam Link listing describes wireless streaming from a PC running Steam and SteamVR to supported Quest headsets. The listing names Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro; it gives a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E with the PC connected to the network by cable. This is a way to play a Steam library on the headset, not a universal way to cast a Quest-only app from the headset to a monitor. Check the Meta Store listing for current compatibility details.

Use PS VR2 with a Windows PC
PS VR2 PC use follows Sony’s specified setup: a PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.0, Steam, SteamVR, and the PlayStation VR2 App. The exact PC and graphics requirements are time-sensitive; check Sony’s PS VR2 support page for current compatibility before buying hardware or troubleshooting a connection.

Troubleshoot the common mismatch
- The monitor is black, but the headset works: confirm that the game or runtime provides a mirror view and that it is open. A headset’s direct display path may not duplicate to the monitor.
- The headset is not detected by SteamVR: check the display and link-box connections and whether they use the same GPU, as Steam’s troubleshooting page advises. This is a headset detection problem, distinct from spectator mirroring.
- The Quest ADB stream does not appear: verify developer-mode setup, the USB data connection, the headset’s authorization prompt, and the result of
adb devices. - The image is awkward for viewers: select a single-eye option where the tool provides one, or crop the two-eye Quest stream in VLC.
- The spectator image feels delayed or has no sound: those are known constraints of Meta’s wired Quest ADB method, not proof that every platform’s mirror works the same way.
