GitHub Stats Card Troubleshooting: Fix Rate Limits, Stale Data, and Broken Images

A valid README embed can still fail when its remote stats service hits API limits or serves cached data. Diagnose the symptom and choose a shared, self-hosted, or GitHub Actions-generated card.

A GitHub README stats card can stop rendering or show old numbers even when its Markdown is valid: the image comes from a remote service, and that service depends on its own availability, GitHub API limits, and caching. For GitHub Readme Stats, the practical choices are to keep using its shared endpoint, run an instance you control, or generate an SVG with GitHub Actions. Which fix fits depends on whether the card is blank, rate-limited, stale, or meant to include private repository data.

First identify what is failing

A README image embed is a request to a remote image URL, not a stats feature rendered directly by GitHub. Correct Markdown therefore does not guarantee the card service will respond. The GitHub Readme Stats project warns that its shared public Vercel instance can hit GitHub API rate limits; that is the project’s warning, not an independent uptime measurement. See its README and configuration documentation.

  • Rate-limit message or intermittent failure: the shared endpoint may have reached an API limit.
  • Card appears but numbers are old: the project caches card data, and different card types have different default cache periods.
  • A direct repository-statistics request returns HTTP 202: GitHub is still computing the statistics; this is not a completed result.
  • Image is entirely absent: verify the URL, username parameter, and README placement before changing the service. A valid embed still cannot rule out a remote service problem.

Check the embed and the README location

  1. Inspect the image URL in your Markdown. Confirm that it points to the intended card endpoint, that the username query parameter matches your GitHub account, and that any optional parameters are spelled correctly. Use the project’s documented endpoint and options as the reference.
  2. Confirm which README GitHub is rendering. A profile README is surfaced from a public repository whose name matches your account name. For any repository README, check that the image is placed in the file GitHub displays. GitHub documents README display locations and rendering limits in its About READMEs guide.
  3. Check for truncation if the card is far down a very long README. GitHub says rendered README files over 500 KiB are truncated; the image may be beyond the displayed portion.
  4. Open the image URL itself. If the endpoint returns a rate-limit notice or an error, the failure is not fixed by rearranging otherwise valid Markdown.

Why the card can hit a limit even when your own use is light

The public endpoint is shared: requests from many people depend on a common service and its access to GitHub’s API. GitHub’s documentation lists limits of 60 unauthenticated API requests per hour, 5,000 authenticated personal access token requests per hour, and 1,000 GITHUB_TOKEN requests per hour per repository for GitHub Actions. Secondary limits also apply. These are documented API limits, not an availability guarantee for any particular third-party card. See GitHub’s rate-limit documentation.

The GitHub Readme Stats project specifically cautions that its shared public Vercel instance could hit the API limiter. A syntactically correct embed can consequently fail when the service cannot fetch data. Repeatedly refreshing the README does not remove an upstream limit; choose a different operating model if the problem recurs.

Choose a more reliable operating model

The project documents three practical options. Their trade-offs are about who runs the request, how freshness is handled, and how much setup you take on.

Approach Who operates it Limits and freshness Private statistics Setup and upkeep
Shared public endpoint The GitHub Readme Stats project operates the public instance. Subject to shared endpoint demand and its documented cache intervals. Not the documented route for private statistics. Lowest setup; relies on the shared service.
Self-hosted instance You operate your deployment. Project documentation says this gives more control over caching and tokens; GitHub API limits still apply. Supported by the project when configured with a GitHub API token. Requires deployment and ongoing configuration.
Static SVG generated by GitHub Actions A workflow generates the image and commits it to your repository. No live card request is needed for each README view; the displayed image updates when the workflow runs. Use the workflow’s secret-based authentication configuration where needed; do not put a token in public Markdown. The project describes this as simpler than self-hosting, but refresh timing depends on the workflow.

The project documents self-hosting and static SVG generation in its README and usage documentation. For a card that repeatedly hits shared limits, a self-hosted instance shifts control of deployment and configuration to you. For a profile that does not need to update on every view, a committed SVG removes the live endpoint request from the rendering path.

Understand stale values before trying to refresh them

The project’s documentation gives these default cache durations. They are documented defaults, not a promise that every view will show data at precisely the end of the interval.

Card type Documented default cache
Stats card 24 hours
Top languages 144 hours (six days)
Pin card 240 hours (ten days)
Gist card 48 hours (two days)

These intervals explain why recent activity may not appear immediately, especially on language and pin cards. If your image is present and its values are merely behind, distinguish ordinary cache delay from a failed request before changing deployment.

Handle HTTP 202 from GitHub repository statistics

When fetching repository statistics directly, GitHub can return HTTP 202 while it calculates the result. GitHub’s repository-statistics endpoint documentation says, “Computing repository statistics is an expensive operation, so we try to return cached data whenever possible.” A 202 means the statistics are not ready: wait briefly and retry rather than treating the response as the completed statistics payload. GitHub says these statistics are cached by the default branch SHA, and a push to the default branch resets that cache.

Use secrets safely for private repository statistics

The project’s documentation says private statistics require an instance you control and a GitHub API token. Keep that token in the deployment’s server-side secret configuration or the appropriate GitHub Actions secret; never expose it in public README Markdown or in a client-visible image URL. The project’s workflow example uses a GitHub Actions secret for authentication.

When a static card is the better fix

If the goal is a dependable profile display rather than live-on-every-view updates, generate the SVG with the project’s documented GitHub Action and commit it into the profile repository. The README then points to a file in that repository rather than making each reader’s view depend on a live card endpoint. The trade-off is freshness: the image changes only when the workflow runs, so set a schedule or trigger that matches how often the profile needs updating. Follow the project’s GitHub Actions instructions for workflow configuration and authentication.
