It accepts text, images, audio and video; the Gemini API also accepts PDFs. Its exact API model ID is gemini-3.5-flash. It is not the newest Gemini model overall: Google announced Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite on July 21, 2026.
What Gemini 3.5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash mean
Gemini 3.5 refers to a model series; Gemini 3.5 Flash is the specific released model covered here. Google describes Flash as a reasoning model based on the Gemini 3 Flash foundation, with adjustable thinking levels intended to balance answer quality, cost and latency. Google DeepMind characterizes it as “the next iteration in the Gemini 3 series of highly-capable, natively multimodal, reasoning models.”

Google announced Gemini 3.5 on May 19, 2026, releasing Flash first. A later Google announcement on July 21, 2026 introduced Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and said Gemini 3.5 Pro was testing with partners. That announcement records the timeline; it does not establish current availability for every model or account.
What it can do—and what it accepts
Gemini 3.5 Flash takes text, images, audio and video as input and produces text. The API documentation also lists PDF input. Google positions it for agentic workflows, coding, long-horizon tasks and multimodal understanding, including work with documents and data. Those are Google’s intended-use examples, not independent evaluations of how well it will handle a particular job.
#1 Best Overall
The Gemini API specifies a maximum of 1,048,576 input tokens and 65,536 output tokens. These are upper limits, not a promise that every app or interface exposes the full capacity.
Tools and limitations
For API developers, Google lists the following supported capabilities:
Rank #2
- Function calling, including standard function calling and combined tool use.
- Code execution, File Search, URL Context, Google Search grounding and Google Maps grounding.
- Structured outputs, thinking and caching.
- Computer use, marked as Preview.
Google lists audio generation, image generation and the Live API as unsupported for this model. Its developer guide also says Gemini 3.x does not support image segmentation; Google points developers who need that capability to Gemini 2.5 Flash with thinking turned off.
Knowledge cutoff and current information
Google’s Gemini API FAQ gives Gemini 3.5 Flash a January 2025 knowledge cutoff. A model’s cutoff matters when a prompt depends on facts that changed afterward; use Google Search grounding when the task needs current information, and verify consequential results against authoritative sources.
Where you can access it
Google’s May 19, 2026 launch announcement listed access through the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, Google Antigravity, Gemini API in AI Studio and Android Studio, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and Gemini Enterprise. The model card also notes distribution to downstream providers through API access subject to applicable terms. Availability can depend on region, account and product terms, so check the relevant interface or API documentation before planning around access.
How to judge its performance
Google’s May 19, 2026 launch announcement reported these benchmark results for Gemini 3.5 Flash:
Rank #4
| Benchmark | Google-reported result |
|---|---|
| Terminal-Bench 2.1 | 76.2% |
| GDPval-AA | 1,656 Elo |
| MCP Atlas | 83.6% |
| CharXiv Reasoning | 84.2% |
These are company-reported benchmark results, not independent testing or a guarantee of results on your workload. Google also claimed that Flash generated output tokens per second at four times the speed of other frontier models; treat that as Google’s comparison claim, not a universal speed ratio across tasks or services.
For a practical model choice, test the exact work you expect it to do. Compare answer quality on representative prompts, latency, input and output capacity, modality and tool needs, reliability across multi-step tasks, current price, and any preview or regional restrictions. The cited capability documentation does not establish a verified current price comparison; consult Google’s live pricing information before budgeting.

Who might find it useful
- Developers building coding or tool-using workflows can assess its function calling, code execution and other API tools against their own integration needs.
- People handling mixed media or long documents can consider its listed input modalities and API limits, while checking whether their chosen product surface supports the required inputs.
- Teams planning multi-step or agentic tasks can evaluate reliability across the whole workflow rather than judging a single response.
These are fit signals based on Google’s stated positioning and capabilities, not a substitute for testing the actual workflow.
