GitHub Pages is a good fit for a blog if you are comfortable writing and maintaining files in a repository and your site can work as static pages. It is less suitable if you expect a built-in visual editor, need server-side features, or want to avoid managing deployment. The deciding question is whether you prefer control over a file-based publishing workflow or the convenience of a managed blogging platform.
What GitHub Pages does for a blog
GitHub Pages hosts static websites from a GitHub repository. You can publish from a branch and folder, or configure a GitHub Actions workflow to build and deploy the site. In practical terms, your posts and site configuration live as files; Pages serves the resulting HTML, CSS, and JavaScript rather than providing a conventional blog dashboard. GitHub’s site creation documentation explains the publishing options.

Branch-based publishing uses Jekyll by default. GitHub describes Jekyll as its built-in static-site generator, supporting Markdown and Liquid. If you prefer another generator, you can build the site through a custom GitHub Actions workflow, but you take responsibility for configuring and maintaining that workflow. GitHub recommends Actions for deployment. See GitHub’s Jekyll documentation and its Pages setup guide.

Hosting follows the same workflow as your files
If you already use Git, publishing can fit naturally into your existing routine: edit a post, commit the change, and deploy it through the repository’s publishing setup. The source and destination are connected, so you can keep the site’s content and configuration together rather than maintaining a separate publishing system.

You can choose a generator
Jekyll is the path with built-in support, which reduces the amount of build configuration needed for a basic site. A custom Actions workflow gives you room to use a different static-site generator, at the cost of additional setup and upkeep. That flexibility is useful when your preferred writing or build tools do not match the default workflow.
Custom domains are supported
You can use an apex domain, such as example.com, or a subdomain, such as www.example.com. GitHub recommends verifying domain ownership before connecting it to reduce takeover risk, and recommends using www alongside an apex domain. DNS configuration differs by domain type: subdomains use CNAME records; apex domains use A, ALIAS, or ANAME records. Consult GitHub’s custom-domain documentation before changing DNS.

Where GitHub Pages becomes a poor fit
It does not run server-side application code
Pages serves static output; it does not support server-side languages such as PHP, Ruby, or Python. A blog that depends on server-side application logic or a conventional dynamic CMS needs another architecture or additional services. Static pages can still include client-side JavaScript, but that does not turn Pages into a server-side application host. GitHub’s setup documentation describes this boundary.

Because posts and settings are managed as repository files, authors should expect a file-oriented workflow rather than a browser-based post editor. That can be efficient for technical writers who like Markdown and version control, but cumbersome for writers who want a visual interface for drafting, formatting, and publishing.

Usage limits constrain very large or busy sites
GitHub’s current Pages limits documentation lists these service limits and recommendations. They are not a promise of capacity:
- Source repository: 1 GB recommended limit.
- Published site: 1 GB maximum.
- Deployment duration: deployment times out after 10 minutes.
- Bandwidth: 100 GB per month soft limit.
- Build frequency: 10 builds per hour soft limit; this frequency limit does not apply to a custom GitHub Actions build-and-publish workflow.
Check GitHub’s Pages limits page when estimating whether your expected site size, traffic, and publishing frequency fit. A small text-focused blog may have very different needs from a site serving large media files or frequent updates.

Commercial use has a specific restriction
GitHub says Pages is not intended as free hosting for a website primarily directed at facilitating commercial transactions or providing commercial software as a service (SaaS). That wording does not mean a blog may never discuss business or include commercial topics; assess the actual purpose of the site against GitHub’s policy rather than treating it as a blanket ban on commercial subject matter. Read the current acceptable-use wording in GitHub’s limits documentation before relying on Pages for a business-facing site.

| Decision factor | GitHub Pages is a stronger fit when… | Consider another approach when… |
|---|---|---|
| Writing and editing | You are comfortable editing files, using Markdown, and managing content in a repository. | You want a managed publishing interface with a visual post editor. |
| Build and deployment | A branch-based setup or a workflow you can maintain meets your needs. | You want deployment previews, rollbacks, or other managed deployment functions without configuring them yourself. Netlify markets these capabilities in its comparison with GitHub Pages; those are vendor claims, not an independent performance comparison. |
| Required functionality | Your site can be delivered as static pages and client-side assets. | You need server-side logic or a conventional CMS. A managed publishing product such as Ghost is one example of a broader publishing approach; its comparison page describes its own product claims. |
| Limits and policy | Your site fits the documented size, deployment, bandwidth, and build constraints, and its intended use aligns with GitHub’s policy. | Your expected traffic, publishing cadence, site size, or commercial purpose calls for a different hosting arrangement. |
| Domain and operations | You are willing to verify domain ownership, configure DNS, and maintain the publishing workflow. | You want a service to take more responsibility for setup and ongoing publishing operations. |
What GitHub Pages does not establish about SEO
GitHub Pages can publish a blog, but that alone does not establish that the blog will be indexed or rank better than one hosted elsewhere. Hosting choice should be based on the publishing workflow, site requirements, limits, and policy fit—not on an assumed search-ranking advantage.
