Google says the Gemini web app is available in more than 230 countries and territories, but its support pages do not say a VPN is required or that one will reliably unlock access elsewhere. If you’re considering a VPN, treat it as a possible connection-privacy tool, not a guaranteed way around Gemini’s availability limits.
What happened to Bard?
Google renamed Bard to Gemini on February 8, 2024. In its announcement, Google Vice President and General Manager Sissie Hsiao wrote: “To reflect this, Bard will now simply be known as Gemini.” Google’s announcement describes the name change and the rollout of Gemini experiences.

That means “Bard VPN” is now a legacy search phrase. For current access information, check Google’s pages for the Gemini web app or mobile app rather than relying on old Bard instructions.

Google’s support pages do not state that you need a VPN to use Gemini. The web app is listed as available in more than 70 languages and over 230 countries and territories, though availability and features can change. Google says expansion will follow local regulations and its AI principles. Check Google’s current Gemini web app availability list for the country and language you plan to use.

Mobile availability is separate from web availability. Google reports that Gemini mobile apps are available in more than 150 countries, and directs users to a separate list. Confirm eligibility on Google’s Gemini mobile app availability page; a country listed for the web app should not be assumed to have the mobile app.
Can a VPN make Gemini available in an unsupported country?
The available Google information does not establish that a VPN will grant access where Gemini is unavailable. Changing the public IP address seen by a service is not proof that all access requirements are met, nor does it establish that the service will work reliably. Do not treat a VPN as a guaranteed workaround.

Before troubleshooting, distinguish the access route you want to use:

- Gemini web app: Check the web app’s country and language support list.
- Gemini mobile app: Check the mobile list separately; mobile availability can differ from web availability.
- Account or feature access: A VPN connection does not establish that an account, app-store region, local rules, or a specific Gemini feature is eligible. Google’s cited availability pages do not say a VPN changes those conditions.
What a VPN can—and cannot—tell you about privacy
A VPN may change the IP address visible to websites and services, but that alone does not establish what information Gemini processes or prevent Google from receiving information you submit. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated September 24, 2026, says Gemini may process prompts and material users provide. It also describes general location inferred from an IP address and precise device location when permission is granted.

The cited information does not establish that a VPN masks precise device location or changes Gemini’s account or feature eligibility.

- Open Google’s Gemini web availability page and check your country and language.
- If you want the phone app, check Google’s mobile availability page separately.
- If Gemini is listed but does not work, check Google’s current help information and your account or app settings before assuming a VPN is the answer.
- If you still want a VPN for ordinary connection privacy, assess providers against documented privacy, security, platform support, and pricing criteria—not an unverified promise of Gemini access.
