GitHub’s documented outages are serious enough to justify a tested continuity plan, but they do not, by themselves, prove that every organization should leave. GitHub reported a 7-hour, 47-minute worldwide outage on August 17, 2026, and its postmortem attributed the incidents to capacity failures. Whether moving platforms is worth the cost depends on your own tolerance for disruption, dependencies, and migration workload—not on a universal “cost to exit.”
What GitHub’s incident reports establish
GitHub’s reports document significant service disruptions, but the incidents had different causes, scopes, and affected users. They are evidence to use in a continuity decision, not a complete reliability score or an apples-to-apples comparison with another provider.

| Incident | What GitHub reported | What it means for planning |
|---|---|---|
| August 17, 2026 | GitHub reported a 7-hour, 47-minute outage affecting users around the world. The disruption involved github.com, authentication, GitHub Actions, APIs, pull requests, issues, and Copilot. In an August 20 postmortem, GitHub said: “Both incidents were capacity failures at their core. We failed to scale critical components before demand exceeded their capacity.” | Consider which parts of your development and release process stop if GitHub or its identity and automation services are unavailable at the same time. |
| July 8, 2026 | GitHub said data-resident Enterprise Cloud environments were unavailable for several services from 15:07 to 22:13 UTC. Services included the web UI, REST and GraphQL APIs, Actions, Packages, Copilot, and Git operations. | Do not assume a data-residency environment is insulated from service interruptions. Check the incident report’s affected environment and services against your own setup. |
| May 21, 2024 | GitHub described a 7-hour, 26-minute degradation after an upstream cloud-provider configuration change. Actions workflow updates were delayed, and GitHub Enterprise Importer customers experienced longer migration runs. GitHub reported no data loss. | Reliability planning should account for dependencies and delayed workflows, not just whether repositories can be cloned during an incident. |
The scale figures in GitHub’s August 2026 update provide context, not an independent audit: GitHub reported 2.9 billion monthly commits, more than 3 million CPU cores and 120 petabytes of high-speed storage added as reliability investments, and roughly 58% of platform load and half of all Git operations served by Azure. These are company-reported figures, not proof of uptime or a comparative measure of reliability.

GitHub’s status history also listed an Actions job-delay incident on October 1, 2026, and a billing-address validation incident in September 2026. Check the GitHub status history for current incident updates; a selected set of postmortems cannot establish how often every user or service is affected. The incident details above are GitHub’s own reports, not independent verification.

Does this justify leaving GitHub?
It justifies deciding in advance what your team will do when GitHub is impaired. It does not establish that GitHub is uniquely unreliable or that switching will eliminate outages. The evidence available here is not an independent, apples-to-apples availability dataset across providers.
A practical decision starts with the consequence of an outage for your organization:
- If the main risk is losing access to Git history: maintain and test repository backups or a second remote. This may address the continuity requirement without moving your everyday workflow.
- If releases depend on GitHub Actions or other hosted services: inventory those dependencies and decide which must keep working during an interruption. A Git mirror alone will not replace them.
- If your organization cannot tolerate a prolonged platform outage: compare a tested alternative operating model with the cost and complexity of running in parallel. Moving providers changes the dependency; it does not make service risk disappear.
- If you are considering a full migration: estimate subscription changes and the people-hours for migration, access redesign, workflow replacement, validation, and cutover before treating a public plan price as the price of leaving.
How much would it cost to move off GitHub?
There is no defensible universal exit price. A useful estimate separates recurring platform spend from one-time transition work, then uses your own repository, seat, integration, and labor inventory. Treat the result as an estimate with explicit assumptions, not a vendor list-price comparison.

Start with recurring platform spend
| Plan listing accessed October 5, 2026 | Listed price and billing qualification | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Enterprise Cloud | $21 USD per user per month for the first 12 months, according to GitHub’s live pricing page. | This is a time-limited offer, not a guaranteed ongoing rate. It does not by itself establish equivalent features or total cost against another plan. |
| GitLab Free | $0 per user per month, according to GitLab’s live pricing page. | Plan suitability depends on required features and usage; the price alone does not establish a like-for-like replacement. |
| GitLab Premium | $29 per user per month, billed annually, according to GitLab’s live pricing page. | Annual billing and the included capabilities need to be compared with your current requirements. |
| GitLab Ultimate | Custom pricing, according to GitLab’s live pricing page. | Obtain a quote for your organization and compare the included capabilities and billing terms. |
These are live-listed prices accessed October 5, 2026, and may change. They are not an apples-to-apples quote. Compare the capabilities you actually use—such as CI/CD, security, package storage, project management, support, identity controls, and data location—along with minimums, taxes, usage charges, and billing terms. GitLab’s pricing page says projects can be imported from GitHub; that statement does not mean every piece of hosted data or configuration will transfer.
Count migration and cutover work separately
Build the labor estimate from an inventory. Include the time to assess, migrate, recreate, verify, and communicate each item rather than applying one flat cost per repository.
- Repositories and metadata: count repositories and identify large files, Git LFS use, wikis, issues and merge requests, archived projects, and metadata your team must retain. GitHub’s migration planning documentation says timing depends substantially on merge-request counts and recommends planning batches.
- Permissions and organization structure: GitHub says its documented GitLab importer does not migrate repository permissions, group settings, or group memberships. Plan to recreate access and validate it with repository owners. GitLab’s nested group model does not map directly to GitHub organizations and teams, so do not assume the reverse mapping will be automatic.
- Workflow and integration replacements: inventory Actions workflows, packages, webhooks, project boards, security scanning, identity provisioning, and other integrations. Estimate conversion and testing effort for each one your team needs. The prices above do not quantify this work.
- Trial migration and validation: GitHub’s GitLab migration procedure recommends trial runs. Validate repository state and team workflows against agreed checks; a successful import alone does not prove that permissions, automation, or operational processes are correct.
- Cutover and parallel operation: budget for coordination, a change freeze, or the manual transfer and reconciliation of changes made during migration. GitHub’s documented importer does not support delta migrations, so changes created after a run may need separate handling. If you keep both platforms running temporarily, include that labor and any overlapping subscription costs.
- Data location and recovery: include any destination, storage, or backup requirements tied to your organization’s policies. Confirm what can be exported, imported, and restored before setting a cutover date.

- Destination subscription for the period you are estimating, using the plan and billing terms that cover your required capabilities.
- Repository assessment and migration labor, including metadata and data that need separate handling.
- Access and organization redesign, followed by permission validation.
- CI/CD, integrations, and feature replacements that your team actually requires.
- Trial runs, data checks, cutover coordination, and any manual reconciliation.
- Parallel-run costs, including overlapping subscriptions and staff time.
- Backup and storage costs if you are improving continuity without an immediate full exit.
A compact model is first-year exit cost = destination subscription + migration labor + parallel-run/cutover labor + required feature replacements + backup/storage costs. Put assumptions beside each line—for example, the seat count and billing term, repositories in scope, expected labor hours, and which data or workflows are excluded. The calculation should distinguish cash expenses from internal staff time.

Set REPOSITORY_URL to the repository you intend to back up. GitHub also documents cloning a wiki because a wiki is itself a Git repository. If the project uses Git LFS, fetch all LFS objects separately; a mirror clone alone does not capture them.
Keep the archive somewhere that is not dependent on the same account or service being protected, and test that your recovery procedure works. An external drive can be one optional storage destination, but GitHub’s documentation does not specify a required drive capacity or endorse a single drive as a robust backup system.

A mirror protects Git repository data and history; it is not a complete export of a GitHub account or its hosted services. GitHub warns that migration archives omit some repository data, including Git LFS objects, discussions, and packages, and says there is no supported documented way to restore those archives on GitHub. Inventory important metadata and service dependencies separately, and test your own recovery path rather than assuming that an archive restores the original project experience.

Is GitLab a reasonable destination?
GitLab is a substantiated alternative to evaluate: its public pricing page lists plans and says GitHub projects can be imported. That makes it a candidate, not an automatic recommendation. Compare the destination against the work your team actually needs to do and confirm details for the migration direction you plan to use.
- Capability fit: check CI/CD, security, package storage, project management, support, identity controls, and data-location requirements against the relevant plan.
- Migration coverage: verify what transfers for Git history, issues, merge requests, wikis, LFS, packages, and metadata. The GitHub migration documentation cited here describes migration from GitLab to GitHub; it should not be treated as instructions or a guarantee for importing in the opposite direction.
- Access model: map groups, projects, roles, and memberships before moving. Recreate and validate any access controls that do not transfer.
- Operational ownership: assess whether your team can monitor, support, and recover the destination and its integrations.
- Reversibility: decide whether a second remote or tested backup meets your continuity need with less disruption than a full migration.
A proportionate plan for the next outage
Continuity work can begin without committing to a platform change. Make the response concrete enough that someone on the team can carry it out when the primary service is unavailable.
Quick Recap
- List service dependencies. Record what developers need for source access, authentication, code review, builds, packages, issue tracking, and releases. Identify which failures block work and which can wait.
- Choose a recovery target. State what repository data must be recoverable, how current it needs to be, and who is responsible for restoring access.
- Back up and test. Create repository mirrors, handle LFS and other important data separately, and run a recovery test that checks more than the existence of an archive.
- Decide whether a second remote is enough. If it meets the continuity target, document how changes will be reconciled. If not, estimate the additional workflows and services required for a viable alternative.
- Revisit the decision using current evidence. Check GitHub’s dated status updates and review your own incident impact and migration assumptions. Do not infer a universal outage rate from a handful of reports.
