Use My work in the GitHub Copilot app to see what is underway, finished, and next. From there, choose a chat session for questions and exploration or a project session when a repository needs planning, inspection, editing, or testing. Separate agent sessions run in isolated workspaces, helping you keep parallel tasks from becoming one tangled conversation.
What the GitHub Copilot app is—and where it fits
The GitHub Copilot app is a desktop workspace for developer and agent-driven work. It brings sessions across repositories and parallel tasks into one place and supports work through the pull-request lifecycle. It is one way to use Copilot, not a required replacement for every other Copilot surface.

Choose the surface that fits the work: the app is oriented around desktop sessions; an IDE can keep assistance close to the code you are editing; the command-line interface suits terminal-based work; and GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile, and GitHub Desktop serve other parts of the GitHub workflow. You can use different surfaces for different tasks.

My work is the app’s orientation point when several tasks are in progress. Check it to understand what is active, what is complete, and what you may want to pick up next. Christopher Harrison puts the purpose plainly in his GitHub Blog beginner-series article: “If you’re juggling multiple Copilot sessions, use the My work pane to track what’s in flight, what’s done, and what’s next.”
#1 Best Overall
A practical habit is to return to My work when switching tasks, rather than relying on memory or keeping every request in one long chat. Treat it as an overview of your sessions; open the relevant session to continue the actual work.
Choose a chat session or a project session
The key choice is whether the task should involve a repository. A chat session is useful for asking, exploring, and brainstorming. A project session is for work tied to a repository, whether you want to plan an approach, inspect code, make changes, or run tests.
| Choose | Best fit | Repository involvement |
|---|---|---|
| Chat session | Questions, exploration, brainstorming, or getting oriented | Does not start repository work |
| Project session | Planning, inspecting, editing, or testing a codebase | Uses a repository for the task |
Start with chat when you are still figuring out the question
Use chat to explore an idea, ask how a concept works, or sort through possible approaches before committing to repository work. It is also a sensible place to get oriented when you are not yet ready to ask an agent to inspect or change code.
Start a project session when the repository is part of the task
Choose a project session when the agent needs code context or the work could involve a plan, inspection, edits, or tests. Depending on the session settings, a project session usually creates a branch or worktree; this is conditional, not a guarantee that every project session creates one.

Keep parallel tasks separate with isolated agent sessions
Each agent session runs in its own isolated workspace. That separation lets distinct tasks proceed in parallel without treating them as edits in one shared session. For example, you might use separate sessions to investigate a bug and explore a different feature. Keep each session focused on one task, then use My work to move between them.
When you need to find or maintain older work, open Manage sessions. It provides tools to search session history, apply filters, archive sessions, delete them, and restore archived chats. Archive a session you may want to keep but do not need in the active view; delete only when you intend to remove it.

Set up a session from the source that fits your work
The app is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. GitHub documents several ways to start repository work, including a local repository, a Git URL, a new working tree, or a cloud sandbox. Which choices are available can depend on current product support and settings.

Check the current in-app options and GitHub documentation when choosing a setup; do not assume a preview capability or a particular session control will remain unchanged.

GitHub describes the app as available with any Copilot plan, and its product information also describes using a user’s own key. Access routes and provider details can change, so check current official plan and setup information before making a purchase or configuring access.
