A canvas can make that state visible and editable by both a person and an agent. GitHub argues that this may reduce repeated prompting and rework, but its published examples do not independently measure those benefits.
What GitHub means by a canvas
GitHub describes a canvas extension as an interactive surface for a work artifact: for example, a plan, triage board, browser session, release checklist, dashboard, incident or spreadsheet. A person can edit the surface while an agent updates it, with controls and agent-callable capabilities operating on shared state. For a kanban board, those capabilities might include get_board, add_card and move_card. See GitHub’s documentation on canvas extensions.

“Spatial” here means that related work has a visible, structured place. It is a workflow-design idea, not evidence that spatial interfaces are universally superior to chat or a claim grounded in cognitive-science research.
Why chat alone can be a poor record of execution
Chat is useful for expressing intent, exploring ambiguity and giving direction. But when a workflow runs across many turns, its plan, decisions, logs, corrections, validation points and approvals can become difficult to locate in the scroll. A canvas gives recurring work a home where someone can inspect its current status and artifacts without reconstructing the whole conversation.

That is GitHub’s rationale, not a universal finding that chat fails for every task. A canvas is most relevant when work needs structure, iteration and verification and chat by itself is not enough.
A four-part pattern for designing a canvas
- Define workflow states clearly. Name the stages a task can occupy so a person can tell what has happened and what comes next.
- Surface consequential decisions. Make judgments that affect direction or readiness visible instead of leaving them only in conversation.
- Persist progress and drafts promptly. Keep intermediate work on the surface so a later turn or handoff need not rely on recovering it from chat.
- Keep human approval points explicit. Identify where a person must review, approve or redirect work rather than implying that an agent’s progress is authorization to proceed.
The design principle is to represent the information and decisions the team needs as explicit workflow state. Not every task needs this extra structure.
What GitHub’s examples show
Java Modernization Studio
Developer Advocate Ayan Gupta describes a canvas for Java modernization that represents assessment, planning, migration tasks, validation gates and readiness to ship. The account says the visible phases let reviewers focus on judgments while agents continued between checkpoints.
Site Studio
Gupta also describes a personal-site content workflow with visible section status, saved drafts, iterative edits, review loops and human approval points. In his account, that structure lets people steer or redirect work without rebuilding context at each iteration.

- Sold as 1 Each.
- Magnetic quality allows you to use colored magnets to mark project status.
- Best suited for moderate use in spaces with regular traffic.
- Customizable column headings; write in your own titles to monitor key information.
- Prestige 2 ConnectsTM frame and marker tray are specially designed to securely hold all Prestige 2 ConnectsTM accessories.
These are examples reported by the author, not independent case studies with measured outcomes. They illustrate why a canvas may suit repeated, multi-stage work that changes hands or waits for review.
How to create one in the GitHub Copilot app
- Start an agent session in the Copilot app.
- Enter
/create-canvas. - Describe the workflow and specify the actions people and agents should be able to perform. GitHub’s example request is: “Create an agentic kanban canvas with actions to create, assign, and move cards.”
- Choose whether the extension should have project scope or personal scope. Project extensions are stored under
.github/extensions; personal extensions are stored under~/.copilot/extensions.
A canvas commonly includes a package.json, an entry file such as extension.mjs, and optionally JSON artifacts for persisted state. GitHub’s documentation also gives examples such as a markdown canvas combining meetings, prioritized issues and pull requests, and agent-session tracking. Issue-triage boards and document canvases are other listed use cases.
When the extra structure is worth considering
Before building a canvas, ask whether the workflow is repeated or complex enough to justify creating and maintaining one. GitHub’s documented use cases suggest practical evaluation questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Does the workflow need state that persists across turns, sessions or handoffs?
- Can both people and agents edit the same work state?
- Are decisions, progress and approvals visible where the work happens?
- Is the surface grounded in the actual task, rather than merely adding another place to check?
- Will the workflow recur enough to make the setup and maintenance effort worthwhile?
If the work is a short exchange with little ongoing state or review, chat may be sufficient. A canvas adds value only when its structure helps people inspect, continue or verify the work.

Setup effort and what the cost examples do—and do not—show
Gupta reports spending about 2,000 AI credits on Site Studio and about 3,000 AI credits on the Java modernization canvas. These are his reported build costs, not standardized prices or benchmarks. The article does not establish a common pricing basis, a controlled comparison or an independently measured return on investment. It also does not quantify hours saved, cost reductions or throughput gains.
Gupta argues that durable surfaces can pay back on repeated workflows by reducing repeated prompts, context loss, back-and-forth and rework. That is a proposed benefit, not a measured outcome in the published account. The practical trade-off is clear: a canvas requires design and upkeep, while any payoff depends on how often the workflow recurs and whether the shared state actually prevents avoidable reconstruction and confusion.
