At the 256GB launch prices listed by PhoneArena, the Fold8 Ultra cost $1,000 more. The practical choice is whether you want a familiar handset or will make enough use of a large foldable screen to justify its higher price and different form factor.
How the two phones differ in daily use
This is a comparison between two different kinds of device, not simply two similarly sized phones. The iPhone 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch display. The Fold8 Ultra has a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch main display when opened. That larger screen can suit reading, viewing and multitasking, but screen size alone does not establish how well a particular app uses the space.

The Fold8 Ultra is the more screen-focused option; the iPhone is the conventional handset choice. The best fit depends on how you use your phone, how much you value a large display, and whether you prefer iOS or Android.

What the $1,000 price difference means
PhoneArena lists 256GB launch MSRPs of $1,099 for the iPhone 17 Pro and $2,099 for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, a $1,000 difference at that storage tier. Those are listed launch prices, not a guarantee of today’s street prices or a comparison of every storage configuration.
Samsung’s US product page lists the Fold8 Ultra from $2,099.99 before trade-in. That is a US price and the page advertises offers that can depend on eligibility and timing; it should not be treated as a universal price or added to the PhoneArena launch-price comparison as though the figures shared the same basis. Check the price in your region and the exact storage tier before deciding. Samsung Australia says the Fold8 Ultra was unveiled on July 22, 2026, and is available to buy in Australia.

Battery, cameras and other buying considerations
Battery life
Samsung states that the Fold8 Ultra offers up to 27 hours of video playback under its stated test conditions. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent head-to-head result. The listed capacities—5,000 mAh for the Fold8 Ultra and 4,252 mAh for the iPhone 17 Pro—cannot establish real-world runtime across different devices and platforms.

Samsung lists a 200 MP wide camera, a 50 MP ultrawide camera and a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom for the Fold8 Ultra. PhoneArena identifies the iPhone 17 Pro as having a triple-camera system. The available specifications do not establish which phone produces better images; megapixel totals are not a substitute for comparable camera testing.

Weight and portability
Samsung lists the Fold8 Ultra at 215 g, while PhoneArena lists the iPhone 17 Pro at 206 g. The Fold8 Ultra is heavier in these listed specifications, while its main screen is substantially larger when open. Consider whether that expanded screen is worth carrying a heavier, foldable device for your routine.
Software and stylus support
The iPhone runs iOS; Samsung lists Android 17 and One UI 9 for the Fold8 Ultra in Australia. Your existing apps, devices and software preferences may make one ecosystem more convenient. Samsung’s US product FAQ states: “Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra does not support S Pen.” Do not assume that Fold-series branding means this model supports Samsung’s S Pen.

Which phone should you choose?
- Choose the iPhone 17 Pro if you want a conventional handset and prefer iOS. Its listed launch MSRP is also lower at the 256GB tier, though current local prices may differ.
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you expect to use its 8-inch main display for reading, viewing or multitasking and accept the higher listed 256GB launch MSRP, greater weight and foldable design.
- Pause before choosing either on battery or camera claims alone. The listed specifications and Samsung’s playback claim do not provide a controlled comparison of real-world performance.
The iPhone 17 Pro is an older generation than the Fold8 Ultra, launched in 2026. Consider each model’s release timing and the support information available for your region alongside price and ecosystem preference; the cited specifications do not provide a matched support-duration comparison.
