Git vs GitLab: Which One Do You Need for Your Workflow?

Git tracks code changes and project history; GitLab hosts Git repositories and adds collaboration and development tools.

Git is the version-control system that records changes to files; GitLab is a platform that hosts Git repositories and adds tools for team collaboration and software development. They are not alternatives at the same layer: Git manages project history, while GitLab provides a shared workspace built around Git.

What Git does

Git is a free, open-source distributed version control system. It records a project’s history and lets developers work with branches and commits on their own computers. You can create and use a Git repository locally without signing up for a hosting platform.

A typical Git workflow is to edit files, stage the changes you want to include, and commit them to the local repository. To share work or keep a remote copy, you can push commits to a remote repository and pull changes from it.

What GitLab adds

GitLab is a Git-based repository manager and software development platform. A GitLab project brings a repository together with collaboration and development tools, including issues, merge requests, CI/CD, access controls, security, deployment, and monitoring capabilities.

Projects can be public, internal, or private. GitLab’s web interface can handle many Git operations; using Git from the command line provides additional flexibility and control.

Git and GitLab compared

Aspect Git GitLab
What it is A distributed version control system A Git-based repository manager and integrated software development platform
Main job Track changes, branches, commits, and project history Host repositories and coordinate collaboration and development workflow
Typical work Clone, edit, stage, commit, branch, push, and pull Manage project issues and merge requests, run CI/CD pipelines, and coordinate access, security, and deployment
Relationship Works independently and can connect to a remote host Uses Git; it does not replace version control

How they work together

  1. Clone: Get a copy of the repository on your computer.
  2. Branch: Create a branch for a change so it can be developed separately from the main line of work.
  3. Edit and commit: Change files, stage the intended updates, and commit them locally to record the work.
  4. Push: Send the branch to a remote repository hosted on GitLab.
  5. Review and merge: Open a merge request so teammates can review the change and merge it into the shared branch. GitLab’s merge process preserves project history and flags conflicts for manual resolution.

Issues and CI/CD pipelines can live alongside the repository in the same GitLab project. Git handles the version history underneath; GitLab organizes the team’s work around it.

Do you need Git if you use GitLab?

Yes. GitLab uses Git repositories, so understanding Git’s basic concepts—repositories, branches, commits, and remotes—helps you work with the platform. You can perform many operations through GitLab’s interface, but Git remains the version-control system doing the underlying job.

Can you use Git without GitLab?

Yes. Git works locally, and you can choose a remote host or other setup when you need to share or back up a repository. GitLab is one option for hosting and team collaboration, not a prerequisite for using Git.

Which GitLab hosting model fits?

GitLab describes three hosting models: GitLab.com is hosted by GitLab; Self-Managed is an instance managed by the customer; and Dedicated is single-tenant SaaS managed by GitLab. The choice depends on who should operate the instance and how your team wants to manage its environment.
