A Git hard reset can discard local changes, while an AWS NAT instance needs EC2 source/destination checking disabled to forward traffic. These are different operations, but both teach the same lesson: know what a safeguard prevents before changing or removing it. The Git workflow and NAT lab below follow Nnamdi Felix Ibe’s Day 30 walkthrough; Git and AWS documentation define the tools’ behavior.
What the two guardrails protect
| Guardrail | What it prevents | Why it may need to change |
|---|---|---|
| Git’s fast-forward push rule | A push that would replace remote branch history with a different history. | A deliberate history rewrite may require a force push, subject to repository policy and server hooks. Git’s push documentation |
| EC2 source/destination checking | Traffic passing through an instance when that instance is neither the packet’s source nor destination. | A NAT instance forwards traffic for other instances, so AWS requires this check to be disabled on it. AWS’s NAT-instance guidance |
They are analogous only as a teaching metaphor: one protects shared commit history; the other filters forwarded network traffic.

Using Git hard reset without losing work unexpectedly
git reset --hard <commit> moves the current branch to the selected commit and resets the index and working tree to match it. Changes in the current working state that are not part of that target can be discarded. The command does not necessarily eliminate every possible recovery route, but you should not rely on recovery after running it. See the official git-reset documentation.

Before resetting
- Confirm which branch is checked out and identify the exact target commit.
- Inspect the working tree and save any changes you may need, for example by committing them or copying them elsewhere.
- Review which commits will no longer be on the branch before updating a shared remote.
When a force push is involved
A normal push generally requires the remote branch to be a fast-forward update. If your local branch has been reset behind or away from the remote history, Git rejects an update that would discard remote commits. A force push overrides that protection, but repository configuration and server-side hooks may still refuse it. Before rewriting a shared branch, coordinate with collaborators and make sure the commits being replaced are understood. Git documents the behavior and caveats in its push reference.

Why a NAT instance needs source/destination checking disabled
“Each EC2 instance performs source/destination checks by default,” AWS says. The check is appropriate for an ordinary instance, which is expected to send or receive traffic addressed to itself. A NAT instance is different: it forwards packets between private resources and an external network, so the forwarded packets have other sources or destinations. AWS therefore requires disabling the check on a NAT instance.
Turning off the check is necessary, not sufficient. The instance also needs a working path to the internet, forwarding and translation configured in its operating system, and routes that send private-subnet traffic through it. AWS’s NAT-instance documentation describes the subnet, route, and check requirements.

Building the NAT path in the Day 30 walkthrough
Ibe describes a private EC2 instance with a cron job that uploads to S3 every minute. The practical question is: why can’t my private EC2 instance reach S3? In the walkthrough, the task appeared to assume an internet gateway was present, but checking the VPC revealed that it was missing. Verify the network foundation before troubleshooting Linux forwarding rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Check the VPC’s internet gateway. Confirm that an internet gateway is attached to the VPC and that the NAT instance’s subnet has a route to it. The NAT instance must be in a public subnet with internet gateway reachability.
- Place the NAT instance in the public subnet. Confirm that the subnet’s route table and the instance’s network configuration support the intended outbound path.
- Enable IP forwarding in Linux. Use the method appropriate to the instance’s operating system and ensure it persists as required by that system.
- Configure address translation. The article’s Linux example uses an iptables
MASQUERADErule on the outbound interface so private traffic can use the NAT instance’s address. - Disable source/destination checking on the NAT instance. This permits it to forward packets that are not addressed to or sent by the instance itself. AWS also documents disabling the check at the network-interface level when routing, NAT, or firewall functions require it.
- Route private-subnet traffic through the NAT instance’s ENI. Update the private subnet’s route table so the intended destination traffic uses the NAT instance’s network interface as its target.
- Validate the full path. Check route tables, security groups, interface names, forwarding state, and the operating system’s firewall and service persistence. A correct MASQUERADE rule cannot compensate for a missing route or internet gateway.
The shell commands in the walkthrough illustrate one Linux and AWS CLI implementation; they are not universal configuration guarantees. Interface names, Linux services, security-group rules, and route state vary by environment.

Git’s fast-forward rule prevents a push from silently replacing remote branch history. EC2 source/destination checking prevents an instance from acting as an intermediary for packets addressed elsewhere. In both cases, disabling or overriding a protection is deliberate and scoped: inspect the consequence, make the change only where needed, and verify the resulting state.
