Choose Krita if your main work is digital painting, illustration, concept art, or 2D animation. Choose GIMP if you mainly retouch photos, manipulate images, make selections, convert formats, or process images in batches. Both can do more than their main strength, so the deciding question is what you do most often—not which program is universally better.
GIMP vs. Krita at a glance
| Your main task | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drawing, painting, illustration, or concept art | Krita | Its feature set emphasizes brushes, stabilizers, drawing assistants, layers, and painting workflows. Krita’s feature overview |
| 2D animation from layered drawings | Krita | Krita describes an animation workspace with a timeline, onion skinning, audio support, and export options. Check the current version for details that matter to your workflow. Krita’s feature overview |
| Photo retouching and general image manipulation | GIMP | GIMP’s manual describes expert-quality photo retouching and covers selections, transformations, layers, scripting, plug-ins, and file formats. GIMP 3.2 manual |
| Image conversion or batch-oriented processing | GIMP | GIMP lists format conversion and online batch processing among its uses; a specific automation workflow may need scripting or plug-ins. GIMP 3.2 manual |
| Moving layered work between programs | Test an export first | Both list PSD support, but that alone does not establish that every layer, effect, or text element will survive an exchange. Krita features and GIMP manual |
Which one is better for digital painting?
Krita is the more natural first choice for painting and illustration. Its official feature overview foregrounds brush tools and drawing-oriented features such as stabilizers and assistants, alongside layers and painting workflows. That focus makes it a better fit when the blank canvas is where most of your work begins.

GIMP can also be used to create digital art; its manual explicitly includes art among its uses. But its stated range is broader, including photo retouching, image manipulation, batch processing, rendering, and conversion. If painting is your primary activity, evaluate Krita first; if painting is occasional work alongside substantial image editing, GIMP may suit your mix.

Start with GIMP for photo retouching and general image manipulation. The GIMP 3.2 manual describes retouching as a core use and lists selections, transformations, layers, scripting, plug-ins, and broad file-format support. Those capabilities also make it a sensible first option for conversion or batch-oriented tasks.

Krita also includes layers, filters, color management, PSD support, and image manipulation features, so it is not limited to painting. The choice is about emphasis: GIMP’s documentation directly identifies photo retouching and conversion as uses, while Krita’s feature presentation is centered on painting and illustration.
Can Krita replace GIMP—or GIMP replace Krita?
Either may cover some of the other program’s tasks, but neither is a guaranteed drop-in replacement for every workflow. Krita is a plausible GIMP alternative when your work is mostly painting and illustration with occasional image manipulation. GIMP can be enough for art projects when they rely on its available tools and you do not need Krita’s painting-led workflow or animation workspace.

Will GIMP and Krita open each other’s files?
Krita’s native KRA projects
Do not assume GIMP can open a Krita-native project. GIMP’s developer-maintained format-support page lists Krita’s KRA format as unsupported. For a handoff, export to a format both applications can use and inspect the result. GIMP format support

PSD exchange
Both applications list PSD support, but support for a format does not prove that every layer, effect, or text element will remain editable and unchanged through a round trip. Keep the original native project, export a copy, and test the specific elements your work depends on before building a regular cross-app workflow around it. Krita features and GIMP 3.2 manual
Do you need a drawing tablet for Krita?
No. A tablet is optional hardware, not a stated requirement for using Krita. The download page says any tablet compatible with the operating system can be used. If stylus pressure or another tablet-specific behavior matters to your work, confirm compatibility with your operating system and test the setup you plan to use. Krita download and requirements

What if your work is for print?
Check the complete production path—document setup, color management, export, and the print provider’s requirements—rather than choosing on one feature alone. Krita’s press page highlights CMYK support. GIMP’s FAQ describes CMYK information and import/export in various formats through conversion to or from RGB storage, including soft-proof profile context. These descriptions do not establish identical color workflows or guarantee compatibility with every print provider. Krita press page and GIMP FAQ
How to make the choice for your workflow
- Start with your most frequent task. Put painting, illustration, concept art, and 2D animation on the Krita side; put photo retouching, manipulation, conversion, and batch-oriented work on the GIMP side.
- Check required hardware and operating systems. If you plan to use a tablet or depend on a particular system, verify compatibility on the current project download pages.
- Test file handoffs with a real project. Keep the native file, export a copy, then inspect the layers and effects that matter. This is especially important if another person or application must continue editing it.
- Verify print requirements with the provider. Confirm the required color profile and file format for the actual production path.
- Try the interface on a representative task. The documentation indicates different centers of gravity, but it does not establish which interface will feel easier to you.
There is no matched-hardware performance comparison here, so speed should not be treated as a reason to declare a winner. The documented strengths support choosing by task and verifying any version- or workflow-specific requirement before committing.
