The Gigabyte TRX50 AERO D is a high-I/O E-ATX motherboard for AMD’s sTR5 Threadripper platform, with four-channel registered DDR5 memory, three PCIe 5.0 M.2 sockets, dual USB4 and 10GbE plus 2.5GbE networking. It sits between consumer desktop platforms and the more expansion- and management-focused WRX90 workstation tier: a strong fit for a Threadripper build that needs fast storage and connectivity, but not a substitute for a board chosen specifically for more memory channels, BMC management or enterprise storage connectors.

What this review can and cannot establish

ServeTheHome’s Ryan Smith published a review on September 30, 2026, describing the board’s positioning and hardware layout. The accessible article text ends at the performance section heading, so benchmark results and test conditions are not available here. The assessment below is therefore a feature and fit review, not a claim of independently measured performance. ServeTheHome review

Which processors work with the TRX50 AERO D?

GIGABYTE lists AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 and 9000 families and Threadripper PRO 7000-WX and 9000-WX families for the sTR5 socket. That broad family support does not guarantee that every specific CPU works with every board revision or out-of-box BIOS. Before purchase, check GIGABYTE’s live CPU support list for the exact processor, board revision and required BIOS version.

Memory: registered RDIMMs, four channels

Revision 1.1 has four DDR5 ECC Registered DIMM sockets, supporting RDIMM and RDIMM-3DS in a quad-channel configuration. GIGABYTE specifies up to 1 TB, but usable capacity, module population and supported speed depend on the processor and memory configuration. Ordinary desktop unbuffered UDIMMs are not the specified memory type.

The official page lists JEDEC rates of DDR5-4400, 4800 and 5200, and higher EXPO/XMP overclocking rates up to DDR5-8000 subject to CPU and DIMM configuration. DDR5-8000 is an advertised overclocking ceiling, not a guaranteed operating speed. Confirm the chosen kit against the current memory support list and CPU-specific limits.

Expansion and storage

The board provides two CPU-integrated PCIe 5.0 x16 slots and one CPU-integrated PCIe 4.0 x16 slot. GIGABYTE says an x16 slot may be used for a graphics card or NVMe SSD and recommends the first slot for a single graphics card. Slot generation and physical x16 dimensions do not by themselves establish that every device will run at its maximum supported speed; check the CPU and device requirements for a particular build.

For internal drives, the revision 1.1 specification lists three PCIe 5.0 M.2 sockets and one PCIe 4.0 M.2 socket, plus eight SATA 6 Gb/s connectors. M.2 length support differs by socket: the PCIe 5.0 sockets list 25110/2280 or 22110/2280 combinations as specified per connector, while the PCIe 4.0 socket is 2280. GIGABYTE lists RAID 0, 1 and 10 for NVMe and SATA storage.

ServeTheHome describes the layout as lacking SlimSAS/Mini-SAS HD-style storage connections. If your workstation depends on those connectors or a particular enterprise-storage topology, this board’s M.2 and SATA complement may not replace the connectivity you need. ServeTheHome hardware overview

USB, networking and wireless

GIGABYTE specifies two rear USB4 Type-C ports, one with DisplayPort capability, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports and four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports. ServeTheHome describes the USB-C pair as 40Gbps ports driven by an Intel JHL8540 controller and notes the board does not claim Thunderbolt 4 certification. USB4 should not be treated as a promise of Thunderbolt certification or identical feature support; verify the requirements of a specific dock or device.

Wired networking combines 10GbE and 2.5GbE RJ-45 ports. Wireless specifications include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3. GIGABYTE notes that Wi-Fi 7 software support requires Windows 11 SV3 and that 6 GHz channel availability varies with local regulations. Its operating-system listing specifies Windows 11 64-bit.

TRX50 versus a WRX90 workstation board

ServeTheHome frames TRX50 as a middle ground between consumer Ryzen systems and WRX90/Threadripper PRO workstation offerings. TRX50 supports standard Threadripper as well as PRO families, but has four memory channels and a reduced workstation feature set compared with WRX90. That positioning makes the AERO D attractive when its mix of slots, M.2, networking and USB4 matches the workload; it is less compelling if the build is driven by maximum workstation expansion or management.

ServeTheHome also notes that this board has no BMC. For comparisons with another TRX50 or WRX90 board, evaluate processor and BIOS support, memory channels and registered-DIMM capacity, PCIe generation and spacing, M.2 count and generation, SATA or enterprise storage connectors, network speeds, USB4/Thunderbolt certification, dimensions and workstation management features.

Case fit and build planning

The board is E-ATX and measures 30.5 × 26.4 cm. Check the chassis manufacturer’s supported motherboard dimensions and internal clearance rather than relying on an “E-ATX compatible” label alone; case support can vary in the width it accommodates and may affect cable routing or nearby components.

Before ordering, verify these items against the exact revision:

  • Processor model and minimum BIOS on GIGABYTE’s current CPU support list.
  • Registered DIMM type, capacity, population and speed against the memory support information for the chosen CPU.
  • Whether the PCIe layout and M.2/SATA connectors cover the graphics, accelerator and storage devices in the build.
  • Chassis fit for the board’s 30.5 × 26.4 cm dimensions.
  • Operating-system and local wireless requirements, particularly Windows 11 SV3 for Wi-Fi 7 software support and local 6 GHz rules.

Verdict: who should consider it?

The TRX50 AERO D makes sense for a Threadripper or Threadripper PRO build that needs registered quad-channel memory, several fast M.2 drives, dual high-speed wired networking and USB4 in one board. Its key compromise is the TRX50 platform’s four-channel memory and more limited workstation expansion and management compared with WRX90; this board also omits BMC and SlimSAS/Mini-SAS HD-style connections according to ServeTheHome. Because no benchmark outcomes are established here, choose it for its documented platform features and confirm exact CPU, BIOS and DIMM compatibility—not on an assumed performance ranking.

Current price and availability vary by retailer and region; neither is established by the cited review text. An AORUS official store listing is available for product details.
