Choose animated AVIF when reducing file size is a priority and you can provide a fallback for clients that do not support animated AVIF. Choose WebP for a modern format with animation, transparency, and lossy or lossless compression. Keep GIF when legacy compatibility or a platform’s expectations matter more than color range and file efficiency. No format is smallest for every animation: compare the converted files at acceptable visual quality and test playback where your audience will view them.
How the formats differ
| Format | Animation and image capabilities | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| GIF | Frame-based animation; lossless LZW compression for 8-bit indexed-color graphics, with a palette of up to 256 colors. | Converting full-color material can cause visible dithering. The format is familiar and widely recognized, but its color limit and compression can make it a poor fit for detailed images. |
| WebP | Animation, transparency, and both lossy and lossless compression. | It offers a modern alternative to GIF, but compare output quality and size on the actual animation rather than assuming a fixed saving. |
| AVIF | Animation, transparency, higher color depths, HDR, and wide color gamut. | Support for animated playback varies by client and version. AVIF also lacks progressive rendering: the file must be fully downloaded before it can be displayed. |
MDN describes GIF’s indexed-color palette and AVIF’s capabilities in its image format guide. Google documents WebP animation and compression options in An image format for the Web; the format’s features are also specified in IETF RFC 9649.

Which format should you use?
Use AVIF when efficiency is the priority
Animated AVIF is a strong candidate when you want modern image capabilities and smaller delivery sizes, and your delivery setup can serve a fallback. The best evidence here is encouraging but scoped: in a 2023 web.dev comparison of 15 sample GIFs from Wikipedia, AVIF achieved approximately 86% median file-size savings against the original GIFs. The article identifies the libavif/libaom and libjxl versions used; that result is not a prediction for every animation or conversion setting. See web.dev’s AVIF deployment article.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AVIF is not automatically the right choice if a file must begin rendering before it has fully downloaded. MDN notes that AVIF does not support progressive rendering. Consider that behavior alongside total file size, playback compatibility, and the way the image appears in your interface.

Use WebP for a broadly supported modern option
WebP supports animated frames, transparency, and lossy or lossless compression. Google says animated WebP can be smaller than GIF and APNG, but its documentation does not give a single percentage that applies to every file. WebP is a practical choice when you want a modern format without GIF’s 256-color limit, provided the browsers and apps you care about handle its animation as expected.
Keep GIF for compatibility or established workflows
GIF remains useful when a destination, application, or audience specifically expects it, or when compatibility with older environments matters more than file size and color fidelity. For photographic or richly colored animation, its limited palette can produce dithering. If appearance matters, inspect the actual GIF rather than assuming conversion preserves the source’s colors.

Check animation support, not just format support
A browser that can display a format’s still images may not support its animated feature in the same way. MDN lists support for WebP in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. For AVIF, it lists Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93, and Safari 16.1; Firefox 93 initially supported still AVIF images, while Firefox 113 and later support animated images. These are browser introductions, not a guarantee that every app, embedded webview, or older device behaves identically. MDN recommends fallback delivery because AVIF has less historical support depth. Check the target clients and versions against the current MDN format guide. web.dev also reports that Chrome, Firefox, and Safari support animated AVIF playback, while advising a fallback approach: Deploying AVIF for more responsive websites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a website, a <picture> element can offer a supported alternative when the browser cannot use the preferred format. Test the actual delivery behavior: fallback handling should be verified in the browsers and apps your audience uses, not inferred from a desktop browser’s ability to open one sample file.

Compare files at the quality you need
File size alone is not a fair comparison if one conversion looks worse. For each candidate, check the same animation at the visual quality you consider acceptable, then compare the resulting file sizes and playback. Include the following in your decision:
- Source material: Colorful or photographic frames may expose GIF’s palette limit; other sources can compress differently in each modern format.
- Transparency: WebP and AVIF support transparency. Confirm that the conversion preserves the transparency your design requires.
- Playback clients: Verify animation playback in the actual browsers, apps, and embedded environments used by your audience.
- Delivery and workflow: A hand-exported asset and an automated image pipeline may use different encoders and settings. Compare the outputs produced by the workflow you will deploy.
- Rendering behavior: Include AVIF’s lack of progressive rendering if early display during download matters.
Do not use still-image compression figures as an animation ranking. MDN’s reported median comparison of AVIF and WebP concerns the same JPG set, not animated GIFs, WebP, and AVIF. It cannot establish which format will produce the smallest animated file.

Convert an animation and verify the result
Creating animated AVIF with FFmpeg
web.dev gives this FFmpeg example for converting a GIF to AVIF:
ffmpeg -i input.gif -c:v libaom-av1 -crf 23 output.avif
In that example, CRF 23 is a starting point for small animated files, not a universal quality setting. web.dev says lower CRF means higher quality and larger files. Compare the output visually and check playback in target clients before using it in production.
Working with WebP
Google documents the libwebp tools, including cwebp and dwebp, for WebP conversion. Consult the Google WebP documentation for tool usage and format details. For an animation, confirm that your chosen converter and workflow preserve the frames, timing, and transparency you need; do not treat a still-image conversion command as proof that the animated asset is correct.
Quick Recap
Validate before publishing
- Convert a representative source animation using the encoder and settings intended for your actual workflow.
- Compare each result at acceptable visual quality, including color, transparency, and any artifacts in motion.
- Record file size and playback behavior for each candidate; judge the trade-off on your own material rather than applying a benchmark from another sample set.
- Test the delivered asset and any fallback in the browsers, apps, and versions your audience uses.
