A GIF can get larger after re-encoding if the new encoder writes more image data for each frame than the original did. Animation-aware optimization can reduce that data by storing only the parts of a frame that change, but it does not guarantee a smaller file. The reported 4.5× increase is a case-specific result; without the original and output files, it cannot be independently confirmed or attributed to a particular cause.
Why a re-encoded GIF can be bigger
An animated GIF is a sequence of images displayed on a canvas. An encoder can store a full-canvas image for every frame, or represent a frame as a smaller rectangle that updates only part of the canvas. The latter can use less data when much of the image stays unchanged.

A re-encode may produce a larger file if it writes more frame data or uses a less compact representation than the original. That is a plausible explanation for a size increase, not a diagnosis of this specific 4.5× result. To determine what happened, you would need to compare the files’ frame rectangles, palettes, disposal settings, and encoder settings.

Interframe differencing compares consecutive frames and encodes changed regions rather than repeating unchanged pixels. Gifsicle’s documented optimization levels build on this idea:

-O1: stores only the changed portion of each image.-O2: also uses transparency.-O3: tries several optimization methods.
For example, you can ask Gifsicle to optimize an input GIF and write a separate output file with gifsicle -O3 input.gif -o output.gif. Keep the original so you can compare the result. Gifsicle cautions that optimization does not guarantee a smaller file: even -O3 can occasionally enlarge one, and higher optimization may take longer.
Why frame disposal matters
With partial-frame encoding, a frame may cover only a small rectangle of the canvas. The viewer must know what to do with that frame before displaying the next one: for example, retain it or dispose of it. The next frame’s appearance can depend on that choice, so an optimization must preserve the intended disposal behavior as well as the visible image.

ImageMagick’s animation guidance describes how disposal choices affect the overlays needed for an animation. Its animation basics page points readers toward its general GIF optimizer rather than the traditional approach of coalescing an animation and then deconstructing it. Avoid treating that older sequence as the preferred current method.
How to check whether optimization worked
- Keep the original and record its size. Note the file size in bytes before making changes.
- Optimize a copy with an animation-aware tool. For Gifsicle, try an optimization level such as
-O1or-O3and save to a new filename. - Compare the output size. Record the resulting byte size; do not assume an optimization setting must reduce it.
- Inspect the whole animation. Check transitions, timing, and looping, not just a still frame. A smaller file is not a successful result if playback no longer looks or behaves correctly.
- If the file grows, test another setting or encoder. Compare both size and playback again rather than relying on the label “optimize.”
For a result others can reproduce, record the tool and version, command or export settings, and before-and-after sizes. Without those details and the actual files, the reported 4.5× increase cannot establish which encoding choice caused the growth.
