The Giants’ reported plan for their game against the visiting Arizona Cardinals was to start Jameis Winston for a second straight week, even after trading for J.J. McCarthy. The October 1 preview described McCarthy as added depth following Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury—not as an immediate replacement for Winston.
Are the Giants starting Jameis Winston?
As of Field Level Media’s October 1, 2026 preview, the Giants were poised to start Winston against Arizona. That report described the plan, not a definitive official announcement or final game-day status, so it should not be treated as confirmation of the lineup at kickoff. Field Level Media’s preview identified the opponent as the visiting Cardinals.

Why are they sticking with Winston after trading for McCarthy?
The Giants acquired McCarthy from Minnesota on Monday as insurance and depth after Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury. The trade addressed the shortage at quarterback; the preview still had Winston in line to start.
Winston acknowledged the pressure to perform regardless of who else was in the building, saying he needed to give the team a chance to win. Tight end Chris Manhertz described adding depth after Dart’s injury as an anticipated move. The New York Daily News report carried by Yahoo quoted both players.

What were Winston’s numbers in the preview?
The October 1 preview gave Winston’s two-game passing line as 25 completions on 49 attempts, 229 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Those figures are a dated snapshot from that report, not a live or definitive season total. The same preview said the Giants had beaten Tennessee 12–7 without scoring a touchdown.
What did coach John Harbaugh say about Winston?
Harbaugh said Winston would not be entering the game “out of the blue” and expressed interest in seeing the team continue to grow and build around the quarterback’s strengths. His comments signaled a plan to adapt as the team moved forward, rather than treating the start as a one-game emergency.

What the report does—and does not—establish
The available coverage supports that Winston was expected to start and McCarthy was brought in for depth. It does not establish a final game-day lineup or provide a detailed comparison of the quarterbacks’ skills or fit. Because the reports are dated and roster status can change quickly, readers following the game should check for a later lineup announcement.
