What the WhatsApp Business API is
The WhatsApp Business Platform is Meta’s hosted business messaging infrastructure; Meta’s developer materials commonly refer to the hosted API as the Cloud API. It lets an application connect business systems such as a CRM or backend to WhatsApp messaging. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Developer Hub is the starting point for the live setup guide, API reference, webhooks, error codes, rate limits, opt-in guidance, policies, pricing resources, and changelog. Meta also describes Cloud API as hosted by Meta in its WhatsApp Business Platform API collection.
What you need before building
Meta’s API collection identifies three core business assets: a Meta business portfolio, a WhatsApp Business Account, and a business phone number. The Cloud API Get Started flow can help create these assets. You will also need a developer app, the phone-number ID used by API requests, and an access token with suitable permissions. Follow the current dashboard flow and documentation for how to create or select these assets; exact eligibility and permission requirements can change.
- Business portfolio: the business container associated with the setup.
- WABA: the WhatsApp Business Account to which the app is connected and subscribed for events.
- Business phone number: the number associated with the API configuration.
- Developer app, phone-number ID, and token: the app makes requests using the relevant account identifiers and credentials.
Build a first working integration
- Open the official setup guide. Start at Meta’s Developer Hub and follow its current Cloud API Get Started flow.
- Set up or select the required business assets. Use the flow to establish the business portfolio, WABA, and business phone number.
- Create or select a developer app and obtain credentials. Capture the phone-number ID and a token appropriate to your intended use. Confirm current permissions and token handling guidance in Meta’s live documentation rather than relying on an old example.
- Send a test message. Use Meta’s current examples or API collection and an eligible recipient to validate the basic outbound request before building broader application behavior. Meta’s hub lists test numbers, code samples, and a sandbox among its developer resources; test access should not be confused with free production messaging.
- Add webhooks if your application must receive events. Configure a reachable endpoint and subscribe the app to the WABA, following the current webhook setup documentation.
- Review production requirements. Check the live guidance for number and business eligibility, app review, opt-in, templates, policies, limits, and pricing before launch.
Send messages and receive events as separate work
Outbound messaging
Sending a message is an API operation made with the relevant phone-number ID and access token. A test message is a useful first milestone: it verifies the basic credentials and request path without requiring you to design the full integration first. Use current Meta samples or the API collection, and check the live API reference for the current Graph API version and request details.

Meta-authored Node.js quickstart material illustrates the basic pattern of setting a phone-number ID, token, and API version before sending a text message. However, that quickstart is explicitly archived and refers to an older Graph API version. Treat it as historical illustration only, not as a current SDK recommendation or a source for a version string to copy.
Inbound messages and status updates
Receiving inbound messages or message-status events requires a webhook; it is not accomplished simply by sending an API request. Meta’s collection explains that the app subscribes to a WABA and that a successful subscription directs webhook events for associated phone numbers to the configured endpoint. Use the live webhook documentation for current verification, signature validation, payload, retry, and delivery behavior. Those implementation specifics can change and should not be inferred from an archived quickstart.

Choose a credential strategy deliberately
Meta’s API collection states that user access tokens expire after 24 hours, while system-user access tokens can last up to 60 days or be permanent. Treat those durations as guidance to reconfirm against current token documentation, since credential rules can change. Temporary credentials displayed during setup are useful for initial testing but should not be copied into a production service without a deliberate token lifecycle, secure storage, and the appropriate current permissions.

Check before moving from test to production

- Policies and enforcement: check Meta’s policy guidance and enforcement information before designing campaigns or automation.
- Rate limits: verify the limits that apply to your account and use case rather than assuming a universal throughput figure.
- Pricing: use Meta’s current pricing resources for your geography and message context. Exact rates and conditions are not established here.
- Webhook security and delivery: implement the current endpoint verification and event-handling requirements documented by Meta.
