When geolocation permission is in the prompt state, the call can make the browser ask the user for permission. If permission is already granted or denied, the stored state decides the outcome, and a new prompt is not necessarily shown. Several other conditions, including secure-context availability and Permissions-Policy, can stop the request before any prompt appears.
What the call does
The method requests a single device position. It does not return that position directly. Instead, the outcome arrives through callbacks, which means your code has to be written to handle both success and failure. MDN’s getCurrentPosition() reference documents the signature as getCurrentPosition(success, error, options).

| Argument | Required | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
success |
Yes | A GeolocationPosition when a position is obtained |
error |
No | A GeolocationPositionError when the request fails, only if the callback was supplied |
options |
No | An object with enableHighAccuracy, timeout, and maximumAge |
The method itself returns undefined. Any code that expects a return value from it will not work as intended. The W3C Geolocation specification describes the same model: a one-shot request, delivered asynchronously, with cached positions and error reporting available.
When the prompt appears
Whether a prompt is shown depends on the current permission state for the page’s origin. The table below summarizes what MDN’s documentation describes for each state.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
| Permission state | What getCurrentPosition() does |
Prompt shown? |
|---|---|---|
prompt |
Asks the user when the method is called, if the call is otherwise allowed | Yes, when the browser allows it |
granted |
The result follows the existing grant | Not necessarily |
denied |
The result follows the stored denial; failure is reported through the error callback if one was supplied | Not necessarily |
The practical consequence is that a developer who tests once, denies the prompt, and then tests again may see no dialog at all. That silence is the permission state working as designed, not a bug in the call.
Why a prompt may not appear
When the expected prompt does not show, check the three conditions below in order. Each one can prevent the call from reaching the user.

The page must be a secure context
The method is available only in a secure context. In practice, that means the page must be served over HTTPS (or from a origin the browser treats as secure). On an insecure page, the call does not produce a usable permission flow, so no prompt appears.
Permissions-Policy can block the feature
A geolocation Permissions-Policy can block access even when the page is secure. MDN documents the default allowlist for the geolocation directive as self. A blocked call invokes the error callback with PERMISSION_DENIED, and no prompt is shown. Policies are set on the response header:

- !!! PLEASE NOTE:Please search satellite signals in an open outdoor area before using this device and there is no signal can be found indoors.When the signal value in the upper left corner of the device screen is below 1 m, start measuring to ensure the accuracy of this device
Permissions-Policy: geolocation=(self)
Permissions-Policy: geolocation=()
The first form allows the page’s own origin; the second disables geolocation entirely. For an embedded cross-origin frame, check both the response’s Permissions-Policy header and the iframe’s allow attribute. An iframe that needs location must be granted it explicitly, for example allow="geolocation", and an restrictive policy on the parent or frame will still block it.
A stored grant or denial is already in place
If the origin is already granted or denied, the browser uses that decision. Permission lifetimes are controlled by the user agent, so a previous choice may last for a session, for a period of time, or longer, depending on the browser and what the user selected. To test the prompt again, reset the site’s permission for the origin in the browser’s site settings. The exact menu location differs between browsers, so consult the browser’s own documentation for the current path.

- Compatible with the Garmin Explore website and app (compatible smartphone required) to help you manage tracks, routes and waypoints and review statistics from the field
Options and what they cost
The options object lets you shape the request. None of them guarantees a particular result, and each one trades something for something else.
| Option | Default (per the W3C specification) | Effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
enableHighAccuracy |
false |
true asks the user agent to seek the best available result |
Can be slower or use more power. It is a request, and the user agent may ignore it. |
timeout |
Infinity |
Sets the maximum time, in milliseconds, before the request fails with a timeout | A short value can fail on devices that need longer to obtain a fix |
maximumAge |
0 |
Allows a cached position up to this age, in milliseconds | The returned position may be older than the user’s current location |
Privacy, denial, and revocation
The W3C specification states the core privacy concern directly: “In almost all cases, this information also discloses the location of the user of the device, thereby potentially compromising the user’s privacy.” That is why the specification calls for express permission before location data is shared, and why it advises implementers to give users awareness of location access and an interface for revoking permission. The specification does not fix how long a permission lasts. Those details vary by user agent.
Best Value
- !!!PLEASE NOTE: Please search satellite signals in an uncovered sky before using. When the signal value in the upper left corner of the device screen is below 1 m, start using to ensure the accuracy of the device. This device don't have map and cannot be used for navigation
- TIPS: The device needed to be held horizontal for taking measurements. Recommend to measure Area above 0.04 acres and distance above 328ft. The larger the measurement range, the smaller the error.The altitude data displayed on the device is GPS altitude, which fluctuates with changes in the satellite signals received. This is normal
- High Precision Measuring: Supports 6 satellite systems for fast, reliable signal, area measurement error in 0.002 acres, distance error in 5 ft,it cannot search satellite signals indoor
- 7 Measurement Modes: Measure area, distance, height and slope; save coordinates (save only, no edit). Two area measurement methods for gardens, parking lots, ranches and flat lands; two distance modes for paths, boundaries and irregular routes to measure straight and curved distances
- Sunlight-Readable 3.2" Color Screen: 240×320 high-resolution large display. Measurement results show directly on screen for easy viewing, clearly visible even under direct bright sunlight
For the application, this has three concrete implications:
- Ask for location only when the feature needs it, and explain the reason in the interface before calling the method, so the browser prompt is not a surprise.
- Treat denial as a normal outcome. The application should keep working, with a manual alternative, rather than repeatedly calling the method.
- Tell users how to revoke access. A site that depends on location should say where that control lives in the browser.
Handling the outcome
A minimal call that handles success, denial, and the other failure codes looks like this:
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(
(position) => {
const { latitude, longitude, accuracy } = position.coords;
showNearbyResults(latitude, longitude, accuracy);
},
(error) => {
switch (error.code) {
case error.PERMISSION_DENIED:
showManualLocationForm();
break;
case error.POSITION_UNAVAILABLE:
showRetryMessage();
break;
case error.TIMEOUT:
showRetryMessage();
break;
}
},
{ enableHighAccuracy: false, timeout: 10000, maximumAge: 60000 }
);
The example uses a lower-accuracy request with a ten-second timeout and accepts a cached position up to one minute old. Adjust those values to the job the feature performs. A map that tracks a moving user needs different settings from a page that only needs the user’s city.
Troubleshooting checklist
- No prompt and no position: confirm the page is a secure context, then check the Permissions-Policy header.
- Error with
PERMISSION_DENIEDand no dialog: check whether the policy or a stored denial is the cause before assuming the user declined. - Prompt appeared earlier but not now: the origin’s stored state is probably
grantedordenied; reset it in the browser’s site settings to test again. - Embedded map inside an iframe does nothing: check the iframe’s
allowattribute and the parent page’s policy. - Results arrive quickly but are stale: a
maximumAgevalue allows cached positions; lower it or set it to0.
The conditions above are the first things to check, but they are not the only ones. Browser-level policies and user-agent behavior can also affect whether a prompt appears, and those differ from one browser to another.
