For fall yard work, the most useful Makita tool depends on the job: a blower for leaves and debris, a string trimmer for edging and overgrowth, a chainsaw for appropriate branch-cutting work, and a hedge trimmer for shrubs. These are four practical categories, not a required checklist; many yards need only the first two.
Which Makita tools help with fall yard cleanup?
Makita’s outdoor-power catalog covers all four jobs. The examples below are manufacturer-listed models, not independent test winners. Choose by task first, then check the model’s battery platform and exactly what the kit includes.

1. Blower: clear leaves and loose debris
A blower is the direct choice for moving leaves and other loose yard debris from lawns, paths, and driveways. Makita identifies cleanup as a use for its LXT blowers. One catalog example is the XBU02PT, a brushless 36V (18V X2) LXT kit supplied with two 5.0Ah batteries. Makita lists up to 28 minutes of runtime at mid-speed with those batteries; that is the manufacturer’s stated figure, not an independent runtime test.

A string trimmer is for grass and weeds along edges, fences, and places a mower cannot reach. Makita describes its LXT trimmers as tools for trimming and edging. The XRU09PT is a brushless 36V (18V X2) LXT kit with 5.0Ah batteries. Makita says its direct-drive brushless trimmers transfer up to 30cc gas-equivalent power, comparing them with its EA3201SRBB two-stroke gas model. Treat that as the company’s comparison, not an independently measured equivalency.
#1 Best Overall
- Variable speed control by trigger
- 3 air volume settings: Low, Medium, High
- Vacuum function - can be used as a vacuum with a dust bag. Increased air volume.
- Compact and lightweight design and Ergonomic soft grip
- Equipped with Battery protection circuit: designed to protect the battery from damages due to overdischarge, high temperature or overload current.
3. Chainsaw: cut branches when the job calls for it
A chainsaw can be relevant for tree- and branch-cutting jobs, but it is not a routine requirement for fall cleanup. Match the saw to the material and task, and use appropriate chainsaw safety practices. Makita’s catalog includes the XCU07PT, a 14-inch brushless 36V (18V X2) LXT kit with 5.0Ah batteries, as well as the GCU04T1, an 18-inch 40V max XGT kit. These differ in platform and bar length; the catalog information does not establish either as a universal choice.
4. Hedge trimmer: shape shrubs and hedges
For trimming shrubs and hedges, Makita lists both gas and cordless examples. The EN5950SH is a 24-inch gas hedge trimmer. In the XGT cordless family, the GHU03M1 is a 30-inch 40V max kit. They are different platforms, not a tested head-to-head comparison; choose based on the work and power system you intend to use.

Can one kit cover the basic cleanup jobs?
If you mainly need a blower and string trimmer, Makita’s XT287SM1 combines both in an 18V LXT brushless two-piece kit. Its product page says the kit includes one 4.0Ah battery and a charger. Makita lists the blower at up to 459 CFM and 116 MPH, and the trimmer at up to 6,000 RPM; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The kit does not replace a chainsaw or hedge trimmer for those separate jobs.

Makita’s LXT and XGT are separate product families. Do not assume a battery or charger will work across LXT, XGT, and ConnectX platforms; verify compatibility for the exact tool and battery. Also distinguish a kit from a tool-only listing: the models described above as kits have battery inclusions stated in the catalog, while the gas hedge-trimmer example is not a cordless kit. Confirm the current package contents before buying, since listings and availability can change.

- Sound pressure rating of 61 dB(A); measured per ANSI B 175.2 standard
- Makita-built motor produces a maximum air velocity of 120 MPH
- 6-stage air velocity/volume selection dial with variable speed control trigger
- Delivers up to 28 minutes of run time at 15,800 RPM using two 18V LXT 5.0Ah batteries (batteries not included)
- Zero emissions and reduced maintenance; no need for gas or oil
For a smaller fall workload, start with the tools that address recurring tasks: a blower for loose debris and a trimmer for edges. Add a hedge trimmer only if you maintain shrubs, and consider a chainsaw only when you have suitable cutting work.
