If the PC has separate headphone and microphone ports, use the model-compatible PC splitter cable instead. Check the port layout and your headset’s documentation before choosing a cable.
Check what kind of audio ports your PC has
A single 3.5 mm combo headset jack carries both headphone audio and microphone input. A desktop with two separate ports—one for headphones and one for a microphone—needs a different connection arrangement. The plug fitting physically does not by itself establish that the headset microphone will work with that computer.

Turtle Beach explicitly says the Stealth 300 can connect to a PC with a 3.5 mm combo jack. For a PC with separate audio and microphone jacks, its Stealth 300 FAQ says an additional PC splitter cable is needed. Treat that guidance as model-specific, not a guarantee for every Turtle Beach headset.

Choose the connection that matches your headset and PC
| Connection option | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct 3.5 mm connection | Your computer has one combo headset jack and the headset model supports it. | Turtle Beach lists this setup for the Stealth 300; confirm your own model’s documentation. |
| PC splitter cable | Your computer has distinct headphone and microphone ports. | Use a splitter specified as compatible with your headset. The Stealth 300 FAQ calls for one in this situation; the Recon Spark product listing documents an included PC splitter for that model. |
| Different headset | Your current headset is incompatible or faulty, or you independently want another headset. | The Recon 70 product listing describes a wired PC headset option. Replacing a headset is not a required first step for a connection or settings problem. |
Connect the headset and select its microphone
- Identify the computer’s ports. Look for a single combo headset jack or separate headphone and microphone jacks. Consult the PC maker’s documentation if the icons or labels are unclear.
- Check the headset model’s instructions. Confirm whether it supports a combo jack and whether a PC splitter is included or required. Do not assume another Turtle Beach model uses the same cable arrangement.
- Connect it. For a supported combo-jack setup, insert the headset’s 3.5 mm plug into that port. If the PC has separate ports, connect the headset using the compatible PC splitter, with its headphone and microphone plugs in their corresponding ports.
- Select the recording input. In your PC’s sound settings, choose the microphone input associated with the connected port. If a game or calling app has its own audio settings, choose the microphone there too.
- Check that the mic responds. Speak while watching the input meter or make a short recording, then play it back. A moving meter or audible recording confirms that the PC is receiving microphone input.
Fix common microphone problems
- The headset appears to be missing from the sound-device list: Some analog headsets may not appear as a separately named device. Turtle Beach notes this behavior for the Stealth 300; the computer may identify the jack or port rather than the headset model. Check the selected recording input and test it instead of relying only on the device name.
- There is no input response: Push the connector fully into the jack, then check that the selected PC recording input and the app’s microphone input are correct.
- The microphone is muted: Check the headset’s hardware mute or flip-to-mute position. Turtle Beach product listings describe flip-to-mute microphones on the Recon Spark and Recon 70; the control and behavior can vary by model.
- You have separate PC ports but no mic input: Confirm you are using a PC headset splitter compatible with your particular headset, rather than connecting only to the headphone port.
- You need to test a detachable microphone boom: Turtle Beach’s mic-test guidance describes connecting a detachable boom directly to a PC microphone or line-in port for a component test. Use that procedure only if your headset has a detachable boom and the appropriate port; it is not a universal test for fixed microphones.
When to buy a cable—or consider a different headset
A splitter is relevant when your PC has separate headphone and microphone ports and your headset requires that arrangement. Before buying one, check the headset instructions and package contents: the Recon Spark listing, for example, says a PC splitter is included with that model. A replacement headset is an option if the current one is incompatible or faulty, not a prerequisite for getting a compatible headset working.
