For games you play often, an SSD is the better fit for speed; an HDD is useful when you want to store a larger library. The examples below are manufacturer-listed options, not independent test winners.
What a gaming HDD is good for
Think of an HDD primarily as bulk storage. Seagate recommends pairing an SSD for speed-critical tasks with an HDD for game storage, and Western Digital describes hard drives as a cost-effective way to store many games. Those are manufacturers’ recommendations, not independent comparisons of load times or value.

If you want the fastest-loading games, keep the games you play most on an SSD. An HDD can hold less frequently played titles or games you are not ready to uninstall. There is no controlled load-time comparison in the cited product information, so advertised drive specifications should not be treated as proof of how quickly a particular game will load.

PlayStation says compatible SuperSpeed USB drives between 250 GB and 8 TB can be used for external storage. Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from an external USB drive connected to a PS4 or PS5. PS5 games stored externally must be transferred back to the PS5’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD before you can play them. Read PlayStation’s external-storage guidance.

Check these details before choosing
- Capacity: Choose enough space for the games you intend to keep installed or archived. The cited figures are product-specific maximums, not a standard for all gaming HDDs.
- Form factor and connection: An internal 3.5-inch SATA drive requires a compatible desktop bay and SATA connection. A portable drive connects over USB, so check the port and cable fit.
- Play versus archive: Confirm whether your platform and the specific game can run from an external HDD or whether the drive is only suitable for storage and transfer.
- Warranty and local terms: Check the warranty and exact model details on the product page for your region. The P10 page cited here lists a three-year limited warranty.
- Price and value: Compare current local prices and cost per terabyte yourself. Prices, availability, and sale value vary by region and were not established by the cited sources.
