If your Samsung Galaxy phone won’t send messages, first identify whether the failure affects SMS, picture or group messages (MMS), or RCS chats. Then check carrier service and signal before changing phone settings. Samsung says carrier service is a common cause, but the messaging app, SIM, and—especially for MMS—mobile-data or APN settings can also be involved. The right fix depends on what fails, who it affects, and whether anything changed recently.
First identify what is failing
“Messages” can mean different services, and a failure in one does not prove the others are broken. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance covers messages that are slow, fail to send, or cannot be received; Google’s Android guidance separately addresses Google Messages connectivity and message sending. Check the conversation and note any error or whether it remains stuck on “sending.”

- SMS: Ordinary text messages fail, including when you send a short text without a photo.
- MMS: Picture messages or group texts fail while ordinary texts may work. MMS can depend on mobile data and carrier APN settings.
- RCS chat: Chat features fail while SMS may still work. RCS has its own carrier, device, SIM-recognition, and connectivity requirements.
Also note whether the problem affects every contact or only one person or group, happens only in one location, or began after a carrier, SIM, software, or messaging-app change. These details help separate a service or coverage issue from one limited to MMS or RCS; they do not by themselves establish the cause.

Samsung advises confirming that the carrier service is active and the account is in good standing. Its U.S. troubleshooting page says carrier service is a common factor in message failures, but that does not diagnose every case. If service is suspended or there is a carrier outage, changing app settings will not restore it. See Samsung’s U.S. messaging troubleshooting guidance.

- Check that your phone has service and a usable signal. If possible, retry from a location where you normally get reliable coverage.
- Check your carrier account for an interruption or other service issue, and ask whether messaging is active on the line.
- Restart the phone and try sending a simple text again.
Samsung’s Gulf-region guidance also recommends checking the network connection. Carrier procedures and availability vary by country and provider, so use your own carrier’s instructions for account or outage checks.
Check the messaging app before changing network settings
Confirm which app you are using to send messages and that it is the intended default messaging app. Samsung notes that messaging apps may not be compatible with current software and recommends checking for app updates. If the problem began after switching apps or updating software, check the app’s status and settings first.

- Open the phone’s default-app settings and confirm the messaging app you intend to use is selected. The exact menu labels vary by Android and One UI version.
- Check the app store for an update to that messaging app and install one if available.
- If the app still behaves incorrectly, clear its cache using the app’s storage settings. Menu names and locations vary by device and software version; choose the cache-clearing option, not a data-clearing option.
Samsung lists app compatibility, updates, and cache as troubleshooting checks in its messaging support guide. If only one conversation fails, compare with a message to another contact before assuming the whole app or carrier service is at fault.
Inspect the SIM if messages still will not send
A SIM that is loose, incorrectly seated, damaged, or not properly recognized can affect messaging. Power the phone off before removing the SIM if the device instructions call for it, then check that it is seated correctly and shows no visible damage. Do not open or repair the phone.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance and Google Messages Help both include checking the SIM. If reseating it does not help, ask your carrier to verify that the SIM and line are activated correctly or whether the SIM needs replacement.
If picture or group messages fail, check MMS conditions
If ordinary SMS works but pictures or group messages do not, focus on MMS rather than treating every text as broken. Samsung’s Korea-specific MMS instructions identify network conditions and data-network/APN settings as possible factors. They also describe restoring APN defaults, reseating the USIM, and restarting as troubleshooting actions.

- Check whether mobile data is available and enabled, then try sending the MMS again.
- Ask your carrier for the correct APN settings for your line and device. Do not enter guessed APN values: carrier configurations can differ.
- If your carrier recommends it, restore the APN defaults for that carrier, then restart the phone and retry.

If RCS chat fails but SMS works, troubleshoot RCS separately
A failure limited to RCS chat does not establish that SMS is broken. RCS availability depends on carrier and device support, SIM recognition, and connectivity. Check the RCS or chat-features status in the messaging app and make sure the phone has a working connection. Google recommends checking whether the carrier supports the message type; Samsung Korea’s Chat+ guidance discusses SIM recognition and data or connectivity requirements.

Consult Google’s Google Messages troubleshooting guide for Google Messages, and Samsung Korea’s Chat+ instructions for that service. RCS names, availability, and requirements can vary by app, carrier, device, and country.
When to contact your carrier or Samsung
- Contact your carrier if the account or service may be interrupted, coverage is unreliable, messaging is not provisioned on the line, APN values are needed, or the SIM may be faulty.
- Contact Samsung support if the carrier confirms service is active and the evidence points to a device or app problem that remains after basic app and SIM checks.
Before contacting support, be ready to say which message type fails, whether it affects all contacts, what error appears, where it happens, and whether the issue followed a recent change. The available Samsung and Google guidance supports these checks, but does not establish a single cause or guarantee that one step will fix every phone.
