During playback, open the CC or subtitles menu and choose an available track. If that track is listed but does not appear, check your device’s caption settings and then try general app and device playback fixes. Subtitle availability and controls vary by title and device.
First check whether the title has the subtitle track you need
Prime Video does not offer the same subtitle languages or accessibility options for every title. Open the title’s details and look for its subtitle languages, or check the CC/subtitles menu during playback. Select the specific language you want; seeing a CC icon does not necessarily mean a track is already enabled. Amazon’s guidance for connected devices and web and mobile notes that availability can vary.

If your preferred language is not listed, try another title whose details show that language. If it appears on the second title, the difference may be the first title’s available tracks rather than a device fault. Amazon does not publish a universal checklist covering every title and market.
Open the playback menu and select a track
- Start playback. If the controls are hidden, tap the screen on a phone or tablet. On a connected device, press the remote’s Enter or Select button if needed to reveal the playback menu.
- Open CC or Subtitles. Choose the caption or subtitle control in the playback menu.
- Select an available language. Choose the track you want, rather than only toggling the icon or assuming Prime Video has selected your preferred language. Amazon’s web and mobile instructions and connected-device instructions describe this playback-menu approach.
Use the caption settings for your device
Fire TV
- Start the video and press Menu on the Fire TV remote or Fire TV app.
- Choose Subtitles, then select an available language instead of Off.
- Press Menu again to return to playback. You can also adjust subtitle size and style. Some languages may not be available for a given title. See Amazon’s Fire TV caption instructions.
Roku
- Press Home and open Settings.
- Select Accessibility or Captions, then Captions mode.
- Choose the caption mode you want. Amazon says Roku does not support Prime Video subtitle presets; edit presets in Roku’s settings instead. Menu wording can vary. See Amazon’s connected-device instructions.
Apple TV
Amazon lists different subtitle-management steps for Apple TV and directs users to Apple support. Because the precise path depends on the Apple TV generation and software, use the current instructions for your model rather than relying on a single generic menu path. Amazon’s connected-device help provides the platform-specific guidance.

Android, iPhone, iPad, and other connected devices
On Android and iOS, reveal the Prime Video playback controls and select the subtitles icon, then choose an available language. Amazon supports captions and subtitles in its mobile apps but cautions that features can differ by model, configuration, and catalog. For other connected devices, use the playback menu’s CC/subtitles control; menu names and options are device-specific. See Amazon’s web and mobile help and connected-device help.
If a listed subtitle track still does not appear
Try these low-risk checks when the track is available but captions are not rendering. Amazon recommends them for playback problems generally; it does not describe them as guaranteed fixes for subtitle-only failures.

If other Prime Video playback problems are happening on Fire TV too, Amazon also recommends checking Fire TV software, restarting the device, and clearing the Prime Video app’s cache or data. Clearing data may require you to sign in again. If an external display or receiver is involved in a broader video problem, check the HDMI/HDCP compatibility of that path; Amazon does not identify HDMI compliance as a subtitle-specific fix. Use the pattern to narrow down the cause
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| The desired language is absent for one title | That track may not be offered for that title. | Check another title that lists the language you want. |
| Subtitles fail on one title but work on others on the same device | The problem may be specific to that title or its track. | Report the issue to Prime Video support. |
| Subtitles fail across several titles on one device | A device setting, app, or playback issue is more plausible. | Check the platform-specific caption settings and try the general playback checks. |
| The same title works on another supported device | The original device’s settings or app may be involved. | Compare the original device’s caption controls and software status with the working device. |
| The track is listed, but captions remain invisible | This points to a selection or rendering issue, not simply an unavailable language. | Re-select the track, check device caption settings, then try the playback checks. |
Testing the same title on another supported device is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. If the problem remains, contact Prime Video support.
