First, identify which remote and device you want to control
“Universal remote” can mean two different setups. A third-party remote is programmed to operate the TV itself using instructions from that remote’s manufacturer. LG’s integrated Universal Control feature configures a Magic Remote to operate a connected HDMI device, such as a set-top box. The steps and compatibility rules are different.

Before starting, note the model number printed on the remote and the full model number of the TV. Those details determine which code list, setup route, and device support apply.

Use the programming instructions for the exact remote model—not a code or key sequence from a different remote’s manual. A remote may require you to switch to TV mode, enter one of the LG codes listed in its documentation, save the code, and test basic functions. Automatic code search is another possibility, but its button sequence differs by remote.

- Find the programming section in the manual or official support information for your universal remote’s exact model.
- Check that the instructions cover programming a television and locate the LG codes or code-search procedure specified for that remote.
- Follow that procedure precisely, including any steps to select TV mode and store the code.
- Test power, volume, input, navigation, and any other functions you need. A code that operates some buttons may not operate all of them.
- If key functions fail, try another LG code listed for that remote or repeat its documented search procedure. If no listed option works, check the remote maker’s compatibility guidance for your TV model.
A basic infrared remote should not be assumed to reproduce every Magic Remote feature. Pointer, voice, and smart-TV functions may not transfer, and support for each function depends on the remote and TV.
Why an LG manual’s code-entry steps may not apply
An LG-hosted manual for the 32LP1D illustrates a particular procedure for the multi-brand remote supplied with that television: turn on the component, press its mode button, hold MENU and MUTE together for two seconds, enter a code from that manual, press MENU to store it, and test. Those instructions are specific to that remote and model; they are not a general procedure or code source for arbitrary third-party remotes and LG TVs. See the LG 32LP1D manual and support page.

Set up an LG Magic Remote for a connected set-top box
LG’s Universal Control workflow is for a Magic Remote controlling supported external equipment; it is not the code-entry method for a third-party remote. Connect the box to the TV over HDMI, select the HDMI input it uses, and follow the setup route for the TV’s webOS version. LG’s guidance also notes that some compatible configurations may configure integrated control automatically when a set-top box is connected to HDMI; this is not a guarantee for every model or device. webOS 23, webOS 22, and webOS 6
- Select the HDMI input connected to the set-top box.
- Open Universal Control Settings, then choose Manage Settings.
- Select Set-top Box, confirm the address and locale, and select the service provider.
- Finish the on-screen setup and run any test the TV offers.
webOS 5.0 and webOS 4.5
- Select the HDMI input connected to the set-top box.
- Open Device Connector and follow its prompts to configure the device’s universal control.
- Complete the provider and device selections shown on screen, then use the offered remote test.
Menu names and automatic setup options can vary by TV model and device. LG says to connect the TV to the network and accept the User Agreements to set up with the latest information. Its 2025 guide says, “The manual setting feature for universal remote control is not supported for any game console.” LG also notes, “Some buttons may not work depending upon the model of the external device.” The feature requires a Magic Remote; LG states, “You can purchase the Magic Remote separately if it is not provided.” Check compatibility for the exact TV model in LG’s webOS universal remote setup guide.

When HDMI-CEC may be enough
If your goal is basic control of compatible equipment over HDMI—such as shared power behavior—try SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC). It is an HDMI device-control setting, not a way to enter a remote code or configure a third-party remote.
- webOS 6.0: Settings → All Settings → General → Devices → HDMI Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On.
- webOS 4.5: Settings → All Settings → Connection → HDMI Device Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On.
- webOS 4.0 or earlier: LG lists a path through the General menu; consult its instructions for the exact route.
After enabling it, test the behavior you need with the connected equipment. The menu path and available control depend on webOS and device support. See LG’s SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) instructions.

Troubleshoot the setup that matches your remote
A third-party remote does not operate the TV
- Confirm that you followed instructions for the remote’s exact model and selected TV mode where required.
- Recheck the entered code against that remote’s own code list, or repeat its documented code-search process.
- Test several functions separately: power, volume, input, and navigation. Partial control may mean another listed code is needed.
- Check the remote maker’s compatibility information if no listed code or search result works with your TV model.
The Magic Remote does not control the set-top box
- Confirm the box is connected to the HDMI input selected on the TV, then open Universal Control settings for that input.
- Verify the selected device type and service provider, and complete any setup test shown on screen.
- Check that the TV is connected to the network and that required User Agreements have been accepted if you need LG’s latest setup information.
- Keep the path between the remote and the external device unobstructed; LG notes that signal path and device support can affect operation.
- If the device is a game console, do not expect LG’s manual Universal Control setup to be supported for it.
SIMPLINK behaves differently from the controls you expected
SIMPLINK uses HDMI-CEC, so it is separate from programming a remote with an LG TV code and from the Magic Remote’s provider-based Universal Control setup. Confirm that the setting is on, then test the specific power or control behavior supported by your connected equipment.
