For a feature that acts when someone arrives at or leaves a place, you usually do not need to collect location continuously. Android and Apple offer system-managed region monitoring: your app registers a geographic region and the transition it cares about, then handles an event delivered by the operating system. That is different from repeatedly requesting location samples to track movement.
System monitoring is not instantaneous, permission-free, or guaranteed to alert in every condition. The right choice depends on how quickly the feature must respond, what location access it needs, and whether the user understands why the app uses location in the background.

What geofencing does—and what it does not do
A geofence is a geographic region with an enter or exit condition. Rather than asking your app to continuously calculate the device’s position, region monitoring lets the operating system watch for a change and notify the app when the condition is met. Apple describes iOS as monitoring registered regions and waking the app as needed when a condition changes (Apple’s region-monitoring guide).

This event-driven model fits actions such as reminding a user when they reach a saved place or recording an arrival. It is not the same as a live route, turn-by-turn navigation, or a feature that must react to each movement. Those cases may need a stream of location updates.

Region monitoring versus continuous background updates
| Approach | How it works | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| System-managed region monitoring | Register a region and the enter/exit transitions of interest; the platform monitors it and delivers an event. | Arrival or departure actions that do not require a position sample every few seconds. | Delivery can be delayed by platform and device conditions; background use still requires appropriate permissions and user transparency. |
| Continuous or frequent location updates | Request location samples over time while the feature is active, including in the background where allowed. | Route recording, navigation, or movement-sensitive features that genuinely need a current position. | Frequent, precise updates and low delivery latency can use more power and collect more location data than a simple arrival trigger needs. |
The difference is not that geofencing uses no location. A geofence operating while the app is not visible still involves background location. The architectural advantage is that the app can ask the system to monitor a condition instead of running its own persistent sampling loop when the feature only needs an enter/exit event.
How Android and Apple deliver geofence events
Android
Android’s Geofencing API lets an app register geofences and receive transition events through a PendingIntent, commonly handled by a receiver. The receiver can then schedule background work or notify the user. Android’s documentation describes the API as battery efficient and advises removing monitoring when it is no longer needed; stopping geofence monitoring can save battery power and CPU cycles (Android Geofencing API guide).

Do not design around a guaranteed instant callback. Android says geofence timing depends on system conditions. Its guidance describes typical latency as under two minutes, around two to three minutes under background limits, and potentially as long as six minutes after a device has been stationary for a significant period. These are documented expectations, not a service-level guarantee. Network-location availability and connectivity can also affect accuracy and alerts. Android 8.0 (API 26) and later may deliver background location updates only a few times each hour, while background geofence events may arrive every couple of minutes (Android background location guide; Geofencing API guide).

Apple distinguishes region monitoring from ordinary location updates. Most apps are suspended shortly after moving to the background and do not continue receiving standard updates while suspended; region monitoring instead has iOS watch registered regions and wake the app when a monitored condition changes (Apple’s background location guide; Apple’s region-monitoring guide).

Authorization details depend on the platform version and implementation. Apple’s authorization documentation lists region monitoring among services available with When In Use authorization and notes its privacy and battery advantages. Check the current authorization flow for your deployment target rather than assuming Android and Apple have identical permission behavior (Apple location authorization guide).
How to choose the right approach
Use region monitoring when an event is enough
- The action depends on entering or leaving a place, not on every intermediate coordinate.
- A delay of a few minutes is acceptable for the user-facing behavior.
- You can handle an event after the operating system delivers it, rather than needing the app to remain continuously active.
Use ongoing updates only when the feature needs them
- The feature must follow a route or respond to movement in near real time.
- Intermediate positions are part of the product’s core function, not merely a convenient implementation detail.
- The experience can explain why ongoing location access is needed and what happens when the app is not visible.
Power use is shaped by accuracy, update frequency, and delivery latency: more precise fixes, more frequent computation, and shorter acceptable latency generally cost more battery. Android recommends considering longer responsiveness windows where the use case permits. Its documentation also makes an “up to 10 times better on some devices” battery-performance claim for background location changes; that is a platform-published, device-qualified claim, not a benchmark or guarantee for a particular app (Android location battery guide).

Permissions and user trust are part of the design
Request the narrowest location access that can deliver the feature. If foreground access is sufficient, do not ask for background access simply because it is convenient. If the feature genuinely depends on background monitoring, explain the benefit clearly before presenting the platform permission prompt, and be accurate about what the app does when closed.
Android guidance says background location should be critical to core functionality, offer clear user benefit, and be obvious to the user. Google Play separately reviews background-location requests: its policy requires a permissions declaration and may require a demonstration, prominent in-app disclosure, and privacy policy. The policy says background location should be requested only when required for core functionality and that foreground location is preferred when it can provide the feature; location access solely for advertising is not acceptable. Review the live policy when preparing a release because platform requirements can change (Google Play background location policy; Android location permissions guide).

Design for delayed events and clean shutdown
- Make delay tolerable. Avoid presenting geofence delivery as an immediate alarm. The platform controls monitoring and event delivery.
- Handle event work efficiently. On Android, use the delivered transition to start only the work needed for that event rather than creating a permanent sampling loop by default.
- Stop what the user no longer needs. Remove obsolete geofences when a reminder, saved place, or monitoring task is disabled.
- Explain the fallback. If location, connectivity, or device conditions prevent a timely alert, the feature should not imply that every boundary crossing will be observed perfectly.
When a managed geospatial service is relevant
Native region monitoring addresses what the mobile device collects and how its operating system delivers transitions. A managed service is a separate architecture decision for teams that need server-side geofence collections or workflows. Amazon Location Service documents geofences and trackers, but that capability alone does not establish that a managed service is preferable to native monitoring for a given app (Amazon Location Service geofences documentation).
