Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a WordPress site, GEO is not a separate technical layer you need to install. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google’s guidance points back to foundational SEO: make useful pages accessible to Search, ensure important information is available as text, and publish reliable content for people. Google specifies no special AI markup, required llms.txt file, chunking method, or AI-only writing style. Meeting the requirements makes a page eligible; it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, selection for an AI response, or traffic.
What GEO means—and how it differs from SEO
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a broad label for work intended to help content appear in, or be cited by, generative search experiences. SEO is the established practice of helping pages be discovered and surfaced in search results. The terms describe different visibility surfaces, but they do not imply that a WordPress publisher must maintain two separate technical systems.

| Question | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where might content appear? | Ranked search results. | Generated responses, which may include links to sources. |
| What can a publisher work on? | Crawlability, useful content, links, and page experience. | For Google AI Search, the same foundational inputs; other proposed tactics may be speculative. |
| How can visibility be monitored? | Search Console Web performance reporting. | Google says AI-feature traffic appears in Web reporting; separate AI Search reporting and controls were announced as rolled out worldwide by August 31, 2026. |
| What is the strongest evidence? | Search-provider documentation and observed site data. | Provider-specific guidance. Google’s statements about its AI features do not establish the rules used by other services. |
For Google, the overlap is the important point: its Search Central guidance says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. That statement applies to those Google features, not automatically to every answer engine.
What WordPress site owners should do
WordPress is a publishing platform, not a shortcut to AI citations. The practical objective is to make your important pages findable, understandable, and genuinely useful. Work through these checks:
#1 Best Overall
- Check access and indexing. Confirm that your robots.txt file, hosting setup, and any content delivery network are not blocking pages you want Google to crawl. Use Google Search Console to diagnose technical Search issues. A page can meet technical requirements and still not be crawled, indexed, or shown.
- Put key information in readable text. Make the substance of a page available as text rather than relying on an image or other element that does not convey the information clearly. Add sensible internal links so visitors and crawlers can reach related pages.
- Use structured data accurately. Structured data can support appropriate Search features, but Google does not require special schema for generative AI Search. Any markup should accurately describe content visible on the page; it is not a GEO switch.
- Make the page useful beyond a generic summary. Address the reader’s actual task and add relevant expertise, original information, examples, or firsthand evidence when available. Do not imply testing or experience that did not happen.
- Review assisted content before publishing. If AI tools help draft or organize a page, verify its factual claims, title, description, structured data, and alt text. Google warns that scaled AI-generated pages without added value may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy.
- Measure what the tools report. Review Search Console’s Web performance reporting for Google Search traffic. Google says traffic from its AI features appears there; the separate AI Search reporting announced in 2026 includes impressions and page- and country-level information.
Do you need a GEO plugin, special schema, or AI writing format?
Not to meet Google’s documented requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A WordPress SEO plugin may help with ordinary site tasks, but a claim that a plugin can secure AI citations goes beyond the guidance described here. Choose tools for concrete needs—such as managing conventional metadata or implementing accurate structured data—not for a promised place in generated answers.
Google’s 2026 guidance says Google Search does not use llms.txt as a special visibility mechanism; creating one neither helps nor harms Google Search visibility according to that guidance. It also says publishers do not need to split every page into tiny chunks, rewrite copy solely for AI systems, or target an ideal page length. Use a structure that helps readers navigate the material, rather than manufacturing an AI format.
Google also cautions against seeking inauthentic third-party mentions. More broadly, avoid treating any proposed GEO tactic as a guarantee unless the relevant provider documents it. Google’s guidance does not establish how ChatGPT, Bing Copilot, Perplexity, or other non-Google systems discover, select, or rank sources.

In a June 3, 2026 announcement, Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode. These are Google-reported audience figures, not an estimate of the traffic a particular WordPress site will receive. The same announcement quoted Google Search Ecosystem general manager Mrinalini Loew: “With our generative AI Search features, people are more satisfied with Search, and they are searching more often.” That is Google’s stated position, not independent evidence that every publisher will see a particular outcome.

Likewise, concepts such as experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness are not a guaranteed checklist for rankings. Google’s people-first guidance presents E-E-A-T as concepts used to evaluate helpfulness and trust, not as one specific ranking factor; it also says search-rater ratings do not directly influence ranking algorithms. Apply the underlying editorial principles because they help readers, not as a promise of placement.

Do not split your workload into “SEO for Google” and a separate set of unverified GEO tricks. Keep pages accessible and internally connected, make their important content readable, use markup only when it describes visible material accurately, and invest in useful original work. Then use the reporting Google actually provides to observe performance, without treating eligibility or aggregate audience figures as a forecast for your site.
